4K Broadcasting

But there’s also a streaming version for those on Foxtel Now/whatever the new service is called.

Edit: Apparently that was fake news. 4K only on broadcast. No wonder Netflix is dominating.

“It’s never guaranteed in terms of delivery so you will never see live sport over the internet in 4K. Picture quality is absolutely dependent upon the speed and consistency of your home internet.”

BT in the UK manage it.

Heck, the BBC just showed both the World Cup and Wimbledon in 4K via the iPlayer

Though for me the jump from HD to 4K won’t be as noticeable as with the jump from SD to HD - except maybe on a screen of 75 inches or more.

I can make a call to Belrose and find out, although getting information from that team could take days to get a reply.

it still could be data based.

VP9 and soon VP10 is open to all to use, broadcast or data stream, DASH is interesting, I have seen it been using by Europe and in particular Nordic countries and Russia.

Yes I know, however to make it easier for others its still a part of MPEG4 branding.

There are HEVC decoders on the market already like Fetch Mighty and Telstra TV and do distribute 4k content via data stream i.e.: Netflix on Fetch.

However live content in 4k resolution is not offered just yet.

But not without issues, actually similar issues to what happened as Optus Sport during SWC.

more like 65".

family member has a Sony 65" top of the range 2017 tech Bravia which has DVB-T2 decoder and was able to view the Sydney UHD tests (it also does DCI standard but that won’t be used here for broadcast maybe for data streaming).

You can see the difference going from 1080i to 1080p content (note: 1080p content is native resolution MPEG4 AVC 1920x1080 progressive data based), you can also see the difference when jumping to 1440p and then again the jump to 2160p in either UHD or DCI standards.

The issue is bit-rate which HEVC sort of fixes, however it still needs to be variable (or adaptive) based and as such that means 2-pass method or they have to risk using VBR_CQ in order to ensure PQ remains stable.

Which is why I ask if FOxtel have released technical details, will it be data IP based or broadcast?

Well that was quick, the answer provided is they have tested UHD but for IP streaming data and yes it is HEVC/AAC UHD standard not DTH UHD Broadcast, at best Optus Sport will be 1920x1080i for satellite right now as tranponder space is limited.

That said the info from Redfern is that they have ability for UHD IP streaming data however the issue is distribution, they can easily switch it on right now but only for customers who are on direct Optus Network connection like HFC (not NBN) or on 2.3GHz LTE 4G with no speedcap in place.

I post some furhter info innthe Optus Sports thread about future developments.

Yes, but at the moment it looks like broadcast only.

As of now DVB-S2, DVB-S2X and other DVB standards are not compatible with VP9. Here is the official specification from the DVB project on which codecs are supported, it doesn’t mention VP9 with a single word. Also why should Foxtel use a codec that isn’t used anywhere else in broadcast?

MPEG-DASH is used world wide. Again Youtube uses it for both on demand videos and live streams.

No, it’s not.

When are we starting an 8K topic?

That’s just ASKING for more dead pixels! : laughing:

Seriously, there is a law of diminishing returns here.

The upgrade from HD to 4K is less noticeable on my 55 inch 4K TV than going from SD to HD was on my old 40 inch Full HD TV.

With 8K, you’d probably need an 85 inch screen to notice any difference.

that and the human eyes cannot process 4K in its entirety really, let alone 8K

Well that’s 18 minutes I’ll never get back! As an older person I can definitely see the difference between HD and 4K. Not as much as between SD and HD but there is a difference. So far I’ve only experienced 4K streaming but I am getting the 4K Foxtel box on Monday. Will post again when the 4K channel starts in October.

I would also dispute the info on this video re the sales of 4K tv’s. I am sure most tv’s sold in Australia are now 4K. Americans are always behind in technology, (and most other things, after all they voted in Trump as president). :joy: IMO they stuffed up digital radio compared to the UK, Australia etc. and ESPN is still in 720 not 1080, on Foxtel!

First 4K event in Australia to actually be shown in 4K in Australia perhaps - the 2015 Cricket World Cup, that despite being filmed in 4K and shown in India like that, wasn’t in 4K here because Foxtel weren’t ready…

Probably never unless they can get more bandwidth.

If it does happen it will probably be via internet.
