Tuesday 12 May from 7pm
The 2026 Federal Budget will be handed down on Tuesday 12 May, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers delivering his fifth and most challenging budget to date, with comprehensive, live coverage across ABC TV and ABC iview from 7pm AEST.*
With the war in Iran and a resulting global energy crisis clouding the domestic and international economic outlook, the government is under mounting pressure to deliver further cost‑of‑living relief and use the crisis to advance longer‑term reform.
Expanding home ownership for young Australians, improving the economy’s resilience to external shocks, and putting the nation’s finances on a more sustainable footing have all been flagged as key priorities for the Albanese government in this Budget, and the ABC’s team of reporters and experts will help you make sense of what it all means for the economy, and for you.
From 7pm, join Jeremy Fernandez for a Budget preview live from Parliament House as part of the Eastern States 7pm News, followed immediately by:
7:30pm: The Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ speech.
After the speech, the ABC’s expert team will bring expert insights and analysis of the Budget and what it means for you.
8:00pm: Budget 2026: 7.30 Budget Special hosted by Sarah Ferguson including interviews with the Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson with analysis from Jane Norman, Jacob Greber, Ian Verrender and Tom Crowley.
8:30pm: In a primetime Insiders Budget Special, David Speers will be joined by budget experts Chris Richardson and Aruna Sathanapally and get political analysis from Insiders regulars Patricia Karvelas, Melissa Clarke and Jacob Greber. Business reporter David Chau looks at what’s in the budget for small and large businesses, and disability affairs reporter Nas Campanella will provide her evaluation of the changes to the NDIS.
9.30pm The Business hosted by Kirsten Aiken and joined by Ian Verrender, Michael Brennan and Devika Shivadekar to dissect the Federal Budget and what it means for the economy, households and business. Michael Janda hosts a panel of housing experts, Alicia Barry explores the business reaction, while David Taylor reports from inside the lock-up.
ABC Radio will have you covered, beginning with the Treasurer’s speech at 7.30pm, and continuing until 9pm with all you need to understand how the Budget will impact you.
The ABC news site will have comprehensive coverage of the Federal Budget, including a live blog featuring contributions from specialists and experts, winners and losers.
The ABC will also broadcast Opposition Leader Angus Taylor’s Budget Reply speech at 7:30pm on Thursday 14 May.

Wednesday 13 May 12:30 pm
Treasurer Jim Chalmers delivers his post-Budget Address to the Press Club from the Great Hall at Parliament House.
Currently not shown on EPG but Seven has planned, which should mean this program will be pre-empted.
Turn to the Seven Network’s 7NEWS for complete coverage of one of the most significant Federal Budgets in decades, as Treasurer Jim Chalmers hands down his fifth budget on Tuesday, 12 May.
7NEWS’ comprehensive coverage begins at 6.00pm, analysing the major changes set to hit Australians and what they will mean for hip pockets and mortgages.
Breaking updates from Canberra will roll out across Seven and 7plus throughout the night, as the Budget is handed down from 7.30pm.
At 9.00pm, join 7NEWS Chief Network Anchor Michael Usher, 7NEWS Chief Political Editor Mark Riley and a panel of Australia’s leading economists and political insiders for a one-hour 7NEWS special, diving deep into the numbers and the impact they will have on households.
7NEWS viewers will not just be watching, they will be part of the conversation, putting the real questions Australians want answered directly to the Government.
With sweeping changes expected to key tax settings including negative gearing and capital gains tax, Mark Riley will use his three decades of experience in the Federal Press Gallery to hold Treasurer Jim Chalmers to account on the decisions shaping the nation’s economic future.
Riley said: “This is a massively important Budget in a time of war, one of the worst oil crises the world has seen and with inflation again rearing its ugly head above family budgets.
“Jim Chalmers has promised to revive young Australians’ dreams of buying their own home without unfairly penalising older generations of taxpayers and to provide cost of living relief without further fuelling inflation. It’s a dangerous balancing act.”
Seven’s Director of News and Current Affairs, Ray Kuka, said: “This is one of the most consequential Budgets in years, and Australians deserve clear, immediate analysis on what it means for them. With the most experienced team in Canberra, we’ll deliver fast, authoritative coverage our viewers can trust.”
Seven’s extensive coverage continues from 5.30am Wednesday, 13 May on Sunrise, breaking down the Budget’s winners and losers.
Australians can also turn to 7NEWS.com.au for up-to-the-minute Federal Budget analysis and insights right throughout the night.

ABC will have coverage from 7:30pm AEST until 9pm AEST
Why don’t they say the hosts
It’s Samantha Donovan, who normally hosts PM anyway. This is a special edition of that program.
Note that the 8pm hour-long special is on top of the 6pm usual (except Perth, obviously). Again, no guests have been announced.
Suppose we just have to tune in and find out.
Interestingly Tom Elliott is missing from this special coverage. Normally he is front and centre.
