Channel 9, 9Now and Stan

In a must-watch moment of the 2025 Federal Election campaign, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will go head-to-head in The Great Debate, live and exclusive on Channel 9, 9Now and Stan at 7.30pm AEST on Tuesday, April 22.

Moderated by Ally Langdon, host of A Current Affair, this one-hour televised debate will tackle the defining issues facing Australians - from the spiralling cost of living and worsening housing affordability, to the strain on healthcare, national security and the challenges posed by global economic uncertainty following tariff hikes by the US Government.

Joining Ally to put the tough questions to the leaders will be a panel of seasoned political journalists from Australia’s largest media organisation:
Charles Croucher - 9News Political Editor
Deb Knight - 2GB and Nine Radio
Phil Coorey - Australian Financial Review

Fiona Dear, Director of News and Current Affairs for Nine, said:
“This is a critical moment in the election campaign. This debate will give voters the clearest look yet at the visions and values of each leader. Whether it’s on the couch with the family watching on Channel 9, 9Now or Stan, or listening on radio and catching the online analysis across Nine’s premier mastheads, it’s a must-watch for anyone who cares about the future direction of this country.”

Debate rules have been designed to ensure a fair and engaging exchange of ideas. Some interjection will be allowed to encourage a free-flowing discussion, though the moderator will police repeated interruptions.

At the conclusion of the debate, Nine’s expert panel will return to break down the major moments and call a winner.

Don’t miss this decisive moment in the campaign – The Great Debate, Tuesday, April 22 at 7.30pm AEST, only on Channel 9, 9Now and Stan.

I’m hoping this is better than a few years ago, when I believe Sarah Abo was hosting at the time.

Hopefully better but the problem is Ally Langdon and her inability to not show her right wing leanings.

He’s also not really a good reporter. Stumbles across the analysis. Has no idea what he’s talking about and spouts right wing talking points as facts. He’s useless.

Please, Mark Riley is anything but right-wing.

The project giving air time to this Fatima Payten. She is a legitimately unserious candidate with pie in the sky policy positions that will never get off the ground. Not to mention she’s really inarticulate, terrible choice of guest.

No one expects you to support her position, but you could at least have the decency of getting her name correct

I actually find him to be a decent and fair reporter for commercial TV standards. Thought he moderated the last Seven debate pretty well

I actually thought that was her name. Close enough it was one letter. She’s a pretty poor politician. Can barely articulate her points clearly. I’m not too sure of her level of education or she just can’t speak properly in public.

She was promising until she had a hissy fit about you know what and then proceeded to talk a load of rubbish about Labor, Liberal and everyone in between.

Totally agree. He’s actually pretty fair. And knows his stuff and has good contacts.

Three debates in three weeks!

And why does Nine’s debate need to be shown on Stan as well?

Attracting a different audience isn’t a bad thing isn’t it?

Testing the viability of hosting news content on Stan before soft-launching a Stan-branded or Nine News-branded streaming news offering, as a potential post-election expansion of the Stan platform?
