2023 NSW State Election - Media Coverage

Their newsrooms are pretty separate, and you can’t deny the most-read paper in the state exists.

Sorry mate, I wasn’t aware they were called Poker machines (only ever heard them as slots or pokies), so assumed I was correcting a spelling mishap. :+1:

No “breaking news” this morning for the election result

More coverage on W Today than W Sunrise and W Breakfast including Charles Croucher.

Did anyone record Sky News’ election night coverage?

Former ABC, 9 and 7 news presenter Kellie Sloan was elected for the Libs at the election over the weekend.

Q+A host Stan Grant has written to ABC management to condemn the lack of diversity in the broadcaster’s NSW election coverage, which he said reduced journalists from diverse backgrounds to “cameo” roles.

The ABC’s news director, Justin Stevens, admits the broadcaster has “a way to go” in achieving diversity after the host of Q+A, Stan Grant, criticised the “entire white panel” on the ABC’s New South Wales election panel.

While Fernandez is a journalist of colour who played a significant part presenting graphics on the night, Grant claimed he was reduced to a “cameo” role.

I think it’s quite disrespectful to Jeremy Fernandez to describe his role as a ‘cameo’ role, I thought he was quite prominent, moreso than Anthony Green even (and as always, he did an excellent job).

With nothing but the greatest due respect to Stan, I feel like he’s reading too much into the situation and putting a racial spin on things where it is really not needed. This sort of thing does little for the reconciliation process and really only fuels unnecessary division.

Stan might have a valid point. Why were Sarah Ferguson and David Speers both needed as hosts on the night? Jeremy was more than capable as a co-host alongside Sarah.

Perhaps because David Speers hosts a weekly political show (Insiders), where as Jeremy Fernandez is more of a news reader and journalist, and hosts more of a variety of entertainment shows like ABC’s NYE coverage and the Australia Day Concert.

Yes but as pointed out last week, the ABC has used state newsreaders as anchors of every election for quite some time, with Speers or Barrie Cassidy on special comments/analysis, rather than a co-host.

Guess sometimes things come down to seniority/experience and not box ticking.
A political journalist/presenter outranked the weekend newsreader.

Agreed. Likewise pretty difficult to get non-white MPs on the panel when parties aren’t preselecting them.
