2022 Federal Election - Media Coverage

Yeah it gets stuck in your head but it’s not a positive thing. We heard jingles and things during the pandemic that were more effective and didn’t drive people nuts and were for actual benefit or positive reasons.

It’s awful and I too have turned off the radio today because of it.

Reckon it was meant to say ‘Network Seven’

Terrible promo for 10 News Election coverage. Doesn’t tell you anything aside from Sandra Sully hosting. As usual it’s shit and they really aren’t doing much in the news space to position themselves in the market.

Australia Votes: ABC Election Day Coverage Saturday, May 21, 2022

As Australians head to the polls this Saturday May 21, the ABC’s unrivalled team of experts will bring you the nation’s most authoritative coverage in a day of dedicated programming on television, on radio and online.

Stay with the ABC throughout the day and into the evening for lively and insightful commentary and rolling news coverage from around Australia.

Television:

The all-day election coverage begins with Johanna Nicholson and Jeremy Fernandez on Weekend Breakfast at 7am (all times are AEST), followed by extended ABC News bulletins throughout the day from 11am to 4pm presented by Joe O’Brien and Karina Carvalho.

A national edition of ABC News on Election Day at 5pm will cross live around the country for the final word before polls close, presented by Jeremy Fernandez and Mary Gearin.

And from 6pm on Election Night, Leigh Sales, Antony Green and David Speers will spearhead our television election broadcast. They’ll be joined by Annabel Crabb, Andrew Probyn, Laura Tingle as well as Labor’s Tanya Plibersek and Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham.

Antony Green’s peerless analysis of the data will give audiences the most reliable and timely updates across the night and as they happen.

Insiders host David Speers will present a new segment with cutting edge graphics which will show audiences not just where the election is being won and lost, but the trends behind the result. Have coal-communities swung back to Labor, have seats with high levels of mortgage stress stuck with the government? David will answer those questions and more with the help of Vote Compass presenter Bridget Brennan, former Deputy State Director of the Victorian Liberal Party Tony Barry and the former Deputy Campaign Director for Labor in Victoria, Kosmos Samaras.

There will be ABC reporters spread from coast to coast in the battleground seats which will decide who forms the next government, and crosses to the key figures from the major and minor parties as the makeup of the 47th parliament starts to take shape. Greg Jennett and Patricia Karvelas will monitor the mood of the Liberal and Labor camps from their Sydney functions, and we’ll bring audiences the victory and concession speeches live as they happen.

On Sunday May 22, Weekend Breakfast will start at 6am to bring you up to date with all the latest, followed by the final 90-minute Insiders program of the 2022 Federal Election campaign, live from the ABC election centre in Ultimo.

David Speers will be joined by David Crowe (The Age & Sydney Morning Herald) Katharine Murphy (The Guardian) and Samantha Maiden (news.com.au) to break down the result for viewers – where it was won, where it was lost, or if it’s still in the balance, who is likely to form minority government.

Expect interviews with senior members of both the Liberal and Labor parties and a look back at the highs and lows of the campaign in an Insiders post-election montage.

If you’re out on the go, standing in line to vote or at an election night party you can stay in touch by live streaming coverage all day on ABC iview, and catchup on key moments and stories afterwards in our Australia Votes collection.

And on the ABC News website and app, a live blog will run throughout the day and into the night as votes are counted and results start coming in. Follow the blog for the latest results, expert analysis from the ABC’s election team and reporters around the country, and get involved by asking the ABC News team a question or leaving a comment.

Radio and Audio:

ABC Audio News and Current Affairs, along with Radio National and ABC NewsRadio, will have the election comprehensively covered for listeners across the voting weekend.

The Party Room podcast with Patricia Karvelas and Fran Kelly will bookend the voting weekend with an episode on Thursday May 19 wrapping up the election campaign and another on Monday May 23 to analyse the election result and the implications for the next term of government.

The Australia Votes podcast will capture the sentiment of voters in crucial seats in the leadup to polling day, and answer questions from listeners with a panel of the ABC’s best political analysts on Friday May 20. A special episode available by lunch time on Sunday May 22 will explain how the election was won and lost.

On election day, This Week with Linda Mottram looks back at how the political contest unfolded and what it means for the future of election campaigning, and from 6pm, Raf Epstein and Sabra Lane will step listeners through all the important take outs from election night and cross to our experts and reporters across the country to bring the very latest news and analysis from the polls. They will be joined throughout the evening by high profile current and former politicians, as well as the candidates in key seats. Thomas Oriti will cover all the latest news on the night.

Listen live via your ABC Local Radio station, ABC NewsRadio, RN or on the ABC Listen app.

On Sunday May 22 from 8am, David Lipson will host the AM program live to bring listeners the washup from election night 2022 and ABC News Daily will also provide an episode focussing on the biggest story from the election result.

Digital:

Download the ABC NEWS app for everything you need on election day. We’ll be there live as Australians cast their vote, when the count begins and right through until the final result is known.

Before you head to the polling booth, use our interactive tool to receive personalised information about where to vote and who your local candidates are. We will answer your questions about the election throughout the weekend to provide you with an understanding of the electoral process and make sense of each day’s events.

Interested to know if “online” defines BVOD? I imagine they will just slam that until the last hours.

Yeh. Really Rowland and Miller should be hosting ABC Breakfast on the Sunday.

No word yet on what’s happening on Nine Radio.

The UAP advertising in the Hobart Mercury to watch their launch on 7 Flix but 7 Flix is not available on free to air here and most Tasmanian’s probably have no idea what 7 Flix is.

I’m sure both potential viewers will be disappointed.

I know they’re repeating what they did for the last election. However, think it would make more sense for the ABC’s coverage to have Karvelas be in the studio alongside Annabel Crabb, Andrew Probyn & Laura Tingle to provide analysis and have another political reporter (such as Jane Norman) report from the function Jennett won’t be at.

One other point - the ABC’s election night talent line-up is arguably the strongest one they’ve had for many an election. The addition of David Speers is a big boost to their broadcast and a massive loss for Sky’s coverage which will definitely be notable on Saturday night.

If the polls are right this time and it looks like on election night that Morrison/the Coalition will lose the election, Murray could potentially have one heck of an on-air meltdown - especially in light of how he’s seemingly convinced that ‘quiet Australians’ (ie; Sky’s primetime viewer base) will deliver the Coalition another miracle victory and hence delay (quoting from the beginning of his program tonight) “…the revolution that turns us away from the country we have all fought so hard to make the greatest place on Earth”.

Any option to catch-up online? QR code to take you straight there? Oh wait, it’s the UAP. Their supporters are just getting used to colour television.

Ch 7 flix :joy:

I heard the radio advert today as “channel 7 flix”

Just sounded so odd…

In most out of home media, I always hear the multis referred to as “Channel 9Go, Channel 7Mate” etc.

It does sound a bit weird, though I can see why they do it when it’s typically not a visual medium.

I’ve never heard the multis referred to in that form though . Seven advertise it as 7 flix etc.

Imagine “Channel RUSH” - another odd one.

“Channel 7 flix, mate etc.” is just so old fashioned.

We’re talking about advertising outside of their own networks here however, so of course they (the networks) don’t put channel in front of the channel name for their own voiceovers etc.

It might be old fashioned, but these types of mediums like Newspapers or radio (where I’ve heard this happen) would need to spell it out to readers or listeners that 10Bold, 9Gem, 7Two are television channels.
