is it really that important to host it somewhere different every time? would they axe it altogether before considering giving Birmingham a second wearing. or offering a multi-year contract to somewhere else.
if a city was offered 2026, 2030 and 2034 as a package, that would make the investment in facilities much more justifiable and surely generate more interest.
Youâve then got to find someone who is willing to host the games over multiple iterations - it might be attractive to some countries though - it would make the infrastructure investment easier to justify though.
I recall that FIFA and the IOC had done some investigation at establishing a base location for their major events that they own/operate/control - with FIFA talking about reducing the interval of the World Cup it makes some sense.
There needs to be a more sustainable approach to hosting the games - maybe its time to consider whether it is critical that everything happens in the same 2 week period and has to be predominately in the same location (city/region) - could the games be elongated over a longer period and have a host country rather then a host city?
Vic Government has announced it is in âexclusive talksâ with the Commonwealth games team about hosting the 2026 games and if successful it will spread the event across regional as well.
âmajorityâ of events to be held in regional vic? I though the whole appeal of Victoria bidding was that Melboune already has the built facilities and can host with short notice.
âexclusive talksâ is an interesting claim when no one else has wanted to talk for 4 years.
I think a massive cost would be the production of the games if it was scattered all across regional. It would require a lot of link trucks / OB setups as apposed to a Broadcast hub if it was centralised.
The Queenâs Baton relay made its way to Seven News Melbourne set this evening, with Rebecca Maddern and Jacqueline Felgate both getting their hands on the baton.
It was at Melbourne Track Classic last night
Before arriving at Ballaratâs Lake Wendouree this morning (with Steve Monaghetti and a group of kids) and the MCG this afternoon before the AFL match between Hawthorn and North Melbourne.
Melbourne was the last stop of the Australian leg of the relay (it had been to Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney). Tomorrow the plane carrying the baton flies out to Belize in the Caribbean.
That was the proposal the Vic government had, was to spread it out into the regions to help revive regional towns.
From a broadcast standpoint it would be a logistical nightmare. So Iâm interested to see how they will manage that one. A lot of OB trucks I imagine.
