2021 Rugby League World Cup Rights

Rugby League World Cup boss Jon Dutton is in town and has spent his time meeting with clubs to put to bed any concerns they may have about the end-of-season tournament. Dutton will be locked in broadcast negotiations next week as he tries to bed down a television partner in Australia.

Nine or Seven will take commercial rights (based off past years). Hopefully FOX can take the Pay TV rights.

Organisers of the rugby league World Cup at the end of the season are struggling to sell the Australian TV rights.

If Nine and Fox League are committed to show next weekend’s tests between Pacific nations, then they should fork out some money to show the World Cup. Besides, the matches will help fill Fox League’s schedule in October and November, instead of endless repeats of classic matches.

I thought surely its behind the paywall either at Foxtel/Kayo or Stan. Limited free games on Freebies or 9/Gem.

The timezone difference isnt great, but having games on demand is still a decent draw

Looks like seven not interested and fox or 9 either.

Looks like there will be discounts to get it on air.

Rugby League World Cup really isn’t attractive to broadcasters. It’s a non event and in all reality these people who run this are so arrogant to think they can charge millions for such an event.

We all know that the Rugby League World Cup isn’t the biggest tournament going around. As it’s pretty much a tri-nations tournament between Australia, New Zealand and England.

The time difference doesn’t help. But since Nine/9Gem is airing next week’s friendlies between the Pacific Nations, then they should get the rights for this tournament. And air it on 9Gem (like they did with the French Open a few weeks ago).

Don’t know about it being a ‘non-event’ considering the 2017 edition played in Australia performed pretty well for Seven.

The big issue with this upcoming edition is it’s very unattractive for broadcasters due to the Australia v England timezone difference. As such, it doesn’t make sense for Nine/Fox/Seven to pay as much as the organizers are seemingly seeking for the rights.

Exactly - it’s almost more beneficial for fans to be able to get up, skip broadcast TV and select the on demand stream spoiler free (hopefully) rather than record it themselves or have to wait for a replay whilst Today probably give the result out anyway.

The difficulty nowadays though is even if you get to the point of watching a delayed match without having been spoilered beforehand it’s so easy to spoiler yourself at the last minute by scrolling through your phone as you’re watching.

So it is not on FTA?

At least rugby league fans here will be relieved that they will be able to watch the tournament live without resorting to illegal live streaming.

And the Fox League channel will be put into good use after the conclusion of the NRL grand final.

Don’t worry it will be on Kayo Freebies.

Fox World Cup coup

Fox Sports has won the exclusive rights to broadcast the rugby league World Cup at the end of season.

Foxtel and Kayo Sports will showcase 61 end of season matches – 31 men’s, 15 women’s and 15 wheelchair games from England between October 15 to November 19.

Fox Sports executive director Steve Crawley said he was thrilled to secure the live and exclusive broadcast rights.

“Fox League and Kayo Sports are flying this season and to now add the Rugby League World Cup is something to bang the drums about,” Crawley said. “All exclusive rights across the 61 matches of men’s, women’s and wheelchair footy very much celebrates the best of the best – on the true homes of rugby league.”
