Still think this is the best promo TVNZ ever produced. Probably the best news promo anywhere ever (IMO anyway). Would love love LOVE to see a modern version.

What a weird shot. Move the desk all the way out or don’t use the studio at all if you don’t have a presenter there.

Forgive my Aussie ignorance but was the King anything but ceremonial?

Wonder what’s going next?

The Herald understands 1news.co.nz and renews.co.nz might be deprioritised – or one or both potentially scrapped altogether – with an all-in focus on news for TVNZ+.

Once the broadcaster consults on its proposed changes, receives feedback and decides on which initiatives it has confirmed, it will unveil proposed structural changes as part of a second stage. That is when there are likely to be proposed job cuts.

While its remaining TV news programmes – including Breakfast, 1News at Six, Seven Sharp and Q+A – are all believed to be safe, staffing on those shows and other local programming might well be in the spotlight.

For example, is having four Breakfast presenters (one, Anna Burns-Francis is on maternity leave right now) a luxury in this day and age?

So what would this mean? ‘News for TVNZ+’ sounds like they’re focusing on video news, perhaps short bites? If so I wonder if this is TVNZ deciding they can no longer compete with Stuff and the Herald? Unless they’re just integrating the 1 news website into TVNZ+, which could be interesting.

Yes! They could easily manage with three, or at a push, two. Also they need to go back to giving each person a different role, rather than having everyone do everything.

In years gone by, you had the two main hosts who shared the interviews between them, the newsreader and sometimes a weather person (who would always be on location somewhere). That works and they should go back to that.

At the moment everything about Breakfast is just wrong. What is with that backdrop? Paul Henry (I always seem to go back to this) had it so right when he said “why have they made it look like Changi bloody airport? Or the hanging gardens of fucking Babylon?”

That would be my suspicion - little to no text, but a lot of raw video. The integration of TVNZ video in NZ Herald content is probably a pointer too.

Seems odd to showcase video as your key strength, which it probably is, while sharing that key strength with the Herald.

Cross-promotion for both, more than anything. Herald videos also going on TVNZ+.

But if they can share video and access a revenue share with NZME, then maybe there’s value in aligning heavier with NZHerald?
