Wollongong Radio

Yeah it is a great spot for coastal coverage. If there was a bush fire situation and ABC local radio use that coastal location for AM Coverage it would help. I’d say Batemans Bay would get reasonable coverage.

Still does, if you’ve got a half decent radio & not too much electrical noise around you, it’s still an easy get around Newcastle, all day, every day, a lot of times better reception than any of the Sydney AM’s.

Shame it’s now horse racing, (same as the old 2NX 1341 Newcastle), could’ve been another option for listening in Newy, like it used to be as 2WL.

Yeah @RFBurns, imagine if they ramp up the power to be like a 702 AM.

Maybe all the Sydney TXs should be moved to the coastline for the same effect.
Maybe Bondi Beach.
Might get rid of a few people from there :grinning:

WIN Radio has brought back the station manager role for i98FM, announcing that Tia Davis will take the position.

Wave FM is launching a local drive show to replace Kate, Tim & Joel, which can already be heard on 94.9 Power FM across much of the Illawarra, as well as on Nova 96.9 from Sydney.

Big news here in the Illawarra:

As a daily listener of “Marty, Crammy & Lyndal”, this is pretty disappointing to hear. They were the best breakfast team i98fm had in years. You can only imagine how much money Grant Broadcasters must have offered Crammy for him to leave his role after decades with i98fm.

According to the link below, they’ll be presenting the new local drive show, which will commence from Monday 8th November, to be aired at 3-7pm weekdays.

Meanwhile, over on i98’s website, they now have a generic Breakfast page, given the above news.

Radioinfo article:

It reveals that the next radio ratings survey for Wollongong won’t take place until March/April next year.

He could also have said ‘96.5 Wave FM booms into Sydney, so commuters can listen to the drive show as they are leaving Sydney’.

Interesting comments made by Ryan Rathbone regarding axing KTJ because Nova 969 booms into the Gong, and listeners can hear it on both stations. Yet he programs the same music logs for both Wave and Power Fm that also boom into large parts of each other’s licence areas. Some times both songs are playing at the same time on both stations.
How is this going to build Wave and Power fm?

Either give Power fm the Rock format log, or put it back on the 7HO fm log. This will be better for both stations IMO.

According to a Radioinfo article about i98FM’s upcoming new breakfast show with Marty:

There’s a rather interesting line on the article in which Station Manager, Tia Davis, said this:

“We are in the process of implementing a lot of positive change at i98FM - both on and off the air."

I wonder what kind of changes are on the way for the station?

With Crammy & Lyndal gone over to Wave FM and Marty staying put, not to mention a few 70s/80s tracks getting a bit of airplay of late, I wonder if this is a sign that i98FM may be skewing a bit older?

I’ve noticed on their website a few days ago that there’s no longer any mention of Tyler Thompson doing workdays on i98.

Well, here is her replacement.

This is a homecoming for him, as he was part of their Street Fleet in 2017 before going on to study a Graduate Diploma of Radio at AFTRS.

He will start on his new role as Workdays presenter (9am-2pm weekdays) from Monday 23rd August.

On the article above, i98’s Content Director, Andy Huxton, said that the station is undergoing an exciting transitional phase, with Cam rejoining the station being a big piece of that puzzle.

I hope i98 skews younger once again. Make Wave sound like the daggy oldies station.

i98 shouldn’t be playing 70s or 80s tracks at all.

There’s still a public perception down here that i98fm plays the “new stuff” and Wave skews older, even though the two stations have been sounding very similar to one another for over a decade now. I’ve known people who have specifically chose to put it on Wave FM for that reason (even though i98fm actually has the more diverse playlist IMO).

The fact that i98fm are gradually starting to change their music format indicates that they’re not as confident in maintaining their dominance in the Wollongong FM market as they once were. I honestly can’t see it working out. If i98fm does decide to skew older, they’re going to have heavily market themselves and significantly change their branding to convince people of the shift, but it wouldn’t be easy.

The job ad for a new breakfast co-host on i98FM is now up: i98FM Breakfast Show Announcer | radioinfo

According to the job ad, the station is being described as a Hot AC station playing the very best ‘Feel Good’ music from the 80s to now, and that they’re looking for an announcer that that can relate to a
“30 something” audience.

The add hints that i98 may skew slightly younger to try to maintain their dominance over Wave fm. I wonder how long the odd 70’s track will stay on the i98 playlist?

i98 have a year to bed in the changes to the breakfast show before the next survey. If the survey was to take place now i98 could be in trouble. Wave having no change at breakfast, new drive show featuring two thirds of the previous i98 Breakfast show, and the Random 30 up against highlights of Carrie & Tommy.

Wait… would a 30 something year old want to hear 80’s music? Or 90’s/00’s music?

90’s/00’s for sure… the music we grew up with.
Some of my mates in their 30’s also like 80’s music unfortunately. I’m not against the odd track here and there.

When I hear 80s to Now I immediately think of the mess heard on some BOG FM stations.

Maybe they’re skewing older because Marty is now older?

I guess they also have to appeal to the people that are actually still listening to the radio. I don’t listen to the radio myself (unless it’s on at work), I stream all my music. I think most people in their 30’s and under would be the same.
