I remember in 1994 Prime used to break away from the Seven schedule to show infomercials after the late movie around 12.30am, watched one night after the movie “Brainstorm” there was a US show called “Ask Mike” who was flogging a “computer tutor”, I thought it was one of those computer documentaries or something like that until I saw “to buy computer tutor please call this number now!” discovered it was an infomercial! By the way Mike wore a multi-coloured sweater and looked a lot like Tim Allen on Home Improvement.
Can someone (@TelevisionAU or anyone else into TV history) reveal the overview of the late night news/entertainment shows of the late 80’s into early 90’s. I don’t know the timeline very well of Graham Kennedy, Tonight Live, Robbo etc and any others I may not have heard of. It seems like a big thing for a little while, then generic late news services in the early/mid 90s that ended up phasing out in the 00’s.
Here’s a great article from TVAU which explains the Late 1980s battle for viewers at 10.30pm far better than I ever could:
Continuing on from that, Nine replaced The World Tonight (which going by the clips I’ve seen in the past, was essentially NewsWorld on Nine) with Nightline around mid-1992.
Don’t think Seven really had a flagship 10.30pm program between the demise of “Tonight Live” around the end of 1993 and the launch of Seven Nightly News: Late Edition (Anne Fulwood was brought over from Ten for this, having successfully presented their late bulletin for a number of years) towards the end of 1995.
I think Ten’s late night news bulletin might’ve been something which started during the Gulf War in 1991 for extended coverage of that event, but rated well enough to become a regular fixture in the schedule?
If nothing else, I’m now at least one step closer to figuring out how long this style of super and “News Update in the Newsroom” lasted on Seven Sydney. From Friday June 18, 1999:
As per the image file, those snapshots were taken from a YouTube upload from “For The Love Of Broadcast” - a couple of the promos (Sabrina Tonight 7.30pm = Friday, Wheel of Fortune returns with new co-host Sophie Faulkiner on Monday) aired during this half hour 5.30pm edition of Million Dollar Chance of a Lifetime helped find an airdate.
This recording mustn’t have been from very long before the major On-Air Presentation changes to Seven Nightly News took place (probably would’ve happened the following Monday June 21 or at the very latest, June 28) because Ann isn’t positioned behind the giant “Seven Nightly News” logo on the wall like she was in a couple of previous updates mentioned a while ago.
Does anyone know which TV channel aired repeats of The Drew Carey Show (the show with “Cleveland rocks, Cleveland rocks” in the theme song) around 2010? I swear it might’ve been either GO! or 7TWO, but I can’t seem to find the answer.
How did Australian commercial metro stations butchered their network promos ? How much a station would butcher those promotions (either O&O or metro affiliates, and in the past and present), #myfriends ?
Have a question re: Central Television Network…who were involved in that arrangement (IIRC this was for ad sales)? I know GTS-BKN certainly were, as they were the only station to actually use the branding on-air. Thought I read somwhere that NTD and Imparja were the NT partners, who else was involved in SA?
