Farewell from Joel

“Thank you for having me. My two weeks are done. Back to the Nine Queensland 6pm desk. I appreciate you being so gentle … See you later.”

Wonder when or if Today will do any OBs from Melbourne Park? 2019 and 2020 was fantastic integration, especially the latter with Karl and Ally IMO.

But since COVID they seem to have gone down the later Seven years track of it being fairly minimal.

I doubt it. They didn’t do it last year except for the final weekend from memory.

IIRC they didn’t even do one for the NRL Grand Final, so of course there won’t be one for the AO.

Which is fair because it isn’t editorially dominant anyway.

Weekend Today was 100% broadcast from Accor on Grand Final Day, as it has been for quite a while now.

I remember when Seven News and Today Tonight even used to broadcast from Melbourne Park:

Maybe Nine originally thought it was a good idea, maximising integration and getting the most out of the broadcast rights deal. But then discovered it was more expensive and cumbersome for little extra real benefit?

7 stopped doing it after big news events started to overshadow broadcasting from ‘the happy slam’.

It’s not that expensive as everything is there and setup.

Is there any idea when the host of weekend today will be announced ?

But why bother? The OB shows end up rating lower in most cases

I don’t think that was always the case, certainly not when Sunrise was steamrolling Today in the 2000s and the Aus Open hit its peak

9 News will rate lower next week. It’s always been the case when the Tennis is on. Seven will pick up viewers. The oldies love their game shows as lead ins.

It is a credit to Nine though that they prioritise the Aus Open and don’t start the brand new season of TP, which they very well could (unless they are contracted with TA to air tennis on main channel outside of 6-7pm local).

Only time that doesn’t happen, is when there’s a thrilling match right on 6pm, especially if a big name or an Australian.

If media reports are correct and Liam Tapper is in the running - if he is selected as the host - it would be a joke. He is terrible live, often fumbles and stumbles his way through a cross, he has zero credibility, having worked as a spin doctor for the LNP, not to mention his right wing, anti immigrant views shared under the thinly veiled guise “some say”. If today show want to appeal to West Sydney, having a host that appears anti migration isn’t the best way.

West Sydney is mainly Seven’s territory. It fits the personalities on each network. East Sydney don’t care if banter can occur even when unnecessary.. while West Sydney wants the news & that’s it

That’s for sure the a-team for 2026 alongside Lizzie and Dan when they come back from their holidays.

Fingers crossed
