I used to like watching’The Weakest Link’ back in the early 00’s .pre streaming days so there wasn’t much I watched back then

I wonder if Seven (or any other network for that matter) would ever consider reviving The Weakest Link for Australian audiences?

Mind you it wouldn’t be quite the same without the late Cornelia Francis, although someone like Lee Lin Chin as the host would probably be alright!

She’d be good! There’s really no one in-house at Seven who could host this show well enough IMO.

They’ll need to change up the format slightly for any reboot to work. The old version was too repetitive.

They should start with general knowledge and then move into themed questions and maybe even incorporate buzzers for contestants to answer questions in certain rounds. Would make the show a lot easier to watch.

Gretel Killeen would make a great host.

The US one is a great reboot. Even the music is modernized but still has the iconic hits and depth to it. It’s like modern nostalgia

Yep, Paul Farrer did a really good job at updating the music:

Some food for thought - I reckon Tiger Mum (aka Cheryl Toh) might be a good host for an Aussie revival!

Please Seven for the love of God don’t bring the Weakest Link back! It made Family Double Dare look like Mastermind!

What about The Main Event then?

I think we’ve all had enough of “you are the weakest link, goodbye!”.

I think if an Australian version of The Weakest Link was to ever be revived, it’d probably turn out moderately successful to begin with (particularly if the host is someone viewers can love to hate, if that makes sense) since the format has been off our screens for nearly two decades.

Mind you, I’m not so sure whether it’d be able to sustain an audience over an extended period of time.

I first saw The Weakest Link when on a visit to the UK in 2000. So I was excited to know that Seven was making a version of it here, but it is one of those formats that the novelty wore off very quickly. Yet somehow it continued in the UK for years, but viewers here are perhaps a bit more fickle. Its popularity dropped here very quickly.

It might be worth doing now for some special shows, sort of like what Ten did with Family Feud earlier this year, but not as an ongoing series.

the same could have been said for The Chase Australia. I remember being hyped up for the local version, which was commissioned to address Seven’s poor 6:00pm news ratings, not least on the East Coast.

On the old Mediaspy Forums 10 years ago I always said Gretel Killeen would be perfect for a Weakest Link revival. I still think she’d be perfect, today.

I did watch an episode of the US version of this a few months ago and I enjoyed it. I think this show could work again on Australian TV if done right. Even though game shows aren’t exactly the “in” thing at the moment, the voting out of contestants adds an element of strategy and makes it completely different element to other game shows. A good host can also really make a show like this as it gives them an opportunity to really play a unique role. There would also be the initial nostalgic factor that might draw some people in. I think it could work on Channel 10 as long as it isn’t over killed multiple nights like other formats.

In light of this rumour, are we in a thread that could soon be moved out of the TV History thread?
