The Project (ending June 27)

Should just get the original 2009 panel back or at least have them in packages:

Charlie Pickering, Carrie Bickmore, Dave Hughes, James Mathieson, Ruby Rose, Steve Price, Kitty Flanagan and Sam Mac.

Mainly those first three.

Really feel for the ATV10 team today. Very sad news for all teams involved in producing The Project.
The show had a terrific run - I think many of us never thought it’d be on air for 16 years, so they should be commended.

I agree - 16 years is still a very great run, and the team should be proud of what they have done.

I know they operate pretty independently to the news, but you’d have to think that the feeling in that newsroom and offices will shift dramatically when the show wraps in a few weeks.

With the last episode airing on a Friday (the 27th of June), I hope they have a “Farewell episode” at 7.30pm, with a celebration of the show. Bring back most of the hosts and regular panellists, with some of the most popular guests on the show too. Boost up Fridays ratings shares.

This to go alongside the normal episode at 6.30pm.

It’s a lot to organise in such a short time.

I agree with you but maybe they won’t be able to do as much as they want.

Fair point. Given the short time.

Even if its more of an hourly highlights program, with some current and former presenters there to talk in between clips? If they and 10 are able to do so?

Maybe just an extended 90 min edition? Not like they have anything that’s rating better on Friday nights.

Sarah went to the Project at the start of 2023 before Studio 10 was axed in December that year. So she wasnt put on The Project to fill a network contract

The ABC should consider poaching the brand for 6pm

Some analysis from the SMH

The ABC would have no budget for anything like this.

I think people need to accept the brand is gone. It’s not going to be reinvented in late night/weekend/breakfast/ABC which have all been suggested in the past week or so. Treat it like a band aid, just tear it off! It’s done

I agree 100% with this. But that is channel 10s biggest problem all around. 10 used to pride themselves on their innovation but they have been playing safe for years. So it’s only to be expected programs like this to fall.

Agreed - I suspect the brand has been sufficiently tainted by all the “woke” moaning from the right fringes that no other network would touch it.

Still, important to mark the show’s importance. 16 years is a great run. I still remember its debut in conjunction with Masterchef being a ratings titan at the time. Ten was still third in the ratings but it was a very solid operator and they nailed the brief of a lighter news format for the early evenings. The format in the beginning was very compelling.

I agree with others though that the show ultimately lost its way and went too far down the harder news route. I think the fallout from the Brittany Higgins interview (and Lisa’s Logie speech and later court testimony) was probably the point where it became clear the brand wasn’t going to las forever.

Show opens with the news, thanking the crew.

I don’t think they have to go out of their way to do a massive send-off for The Project’s final episode. Especially when there’s very few people watching (the majority are either watching Seven or Nine - or on streaming services - instead), and way more people speculating about its demise rather than its future.

Few watching = Small send-off
Heaps watching = Massive send-off

Sorry to disappoint some but the majority of viewers have spoken. I can’t imagine many viewers today coming back from Seven and Nine to see The Project’s final episode, instead sticking to their regular habits of Seven, Nine, YouTube or streaming services, or Social Media platforms.

The only viewers tuning in would probably be those who have been the most loyal to the show, those who are superfans, and of course media insiders and those in media forums (like us) who, for a long time, have been (again) speculating about its demise.

So we speculated about its end, and after all this time, looks like we (and a large portion of the viewing public who also wanted it gone) got what we wanted. So here’s to 2 more weeks of The Project before it disappears for good.

However, while many people (and some of us) are glad The Project is going away from TV screens, not all is celebratory, as we should also not forget the hosts and those involved in the show who will perhaps likely lose their jobs in 2.5 weeks time. To those affected at Network 10, I hope you can find new jobs elsewhere within the network or at rival networks, and I would like to wish you the very best for what’s to come.

If anyone finds this post controversial in any way, I can happily remove it.

Some really well said words from all on the desk at the beginning, especially Steve Price.

Don’t be stupid and disrespectful. Most shows go out with a bang whether they’re still smashing it in the ratings or not.

I expect to see lots of nostalgia from the past 16 years in the next three weeks. It should be handled as a celebration.
