Wonderful ep tonight - the cliffhanger at the end.
You could also see some socially distant scenes as well. They have done so well to make this series in the middle of lockdowns and border restrictions.

Every episode has been good so far. Last night’s episode was good too. I didn’t even notice the social distancing in some scenes while watching it. Then it was just mentioned in the post above and then thought “oh yeah. They shot it really well”. Well done to the production team.
So what did we think of the finale episode?
Myself, really enjoyed it and definitely leads to a second season.
Loved it, loved the season. Bring on Season 2, 3 and more.
Dale and Helen’s relationship accepting each others pasts was great. I reckon Dale is bisexual and it would be interesting to explore that.
I might be the odd one out, but I thought it wasn’t great, which was a shame because it was a good series - I’m not a fan of the slow build and then a rushed finish
It didn’t feel to me like it was setting up for another season
I would have loved two more eps at least but it is always good wanting more!
I think it will be renewed. Total Control did similar numbers and the catch up figures are great. ABC would be stupid not to renew it.
One or maybe two more episodes would have allowed them to wrap things up a little more neatly for sure
I do wonder with some of the TV we’re seeing at the moment (and possibly will see into the future) how much COVID-19 has impacted the ability to deliver the story as originally intended.
Music from the series
It did seem rushed after Helen repeatedly refused to speak to Dale and then just accepted what he said without going into too much detail or taking the time to take it all in.
I think too with Geoff getting axed in such fashion and the sports man sticking firm on sport. It was better for their on air partnership to be successful to have the discussion there and then and allow for Helen and Dale to be successful and happy as opposed to Helen and Geoff.
Very similar to what happened to Mal Walden in 1987 with HSV7.
I don’t think it’s that severe. If any comparison should be made it’s probably that of Jim Waley when he was unceremoniously dumped.
It’s happened to a lot of older newsreaders over the years on all three commercial networks.
Thanks for the interesting discussion. I was wondering, if anyone knew the rough filming locations of the houses and apartments?
So, when Helen walked from her Office to the News Desk it was really a 25 minute drive from South Melbourne to Brooklyn? I’m thinking back to Sea Change (Laura walking to work was actually halfway up the Bay), plus Mad Max’s underground car park exit and Downton Abbey ‘stairs’ too
In reality yes, but in the show the studio is located below the newsroom.
The Newsreader was based on 1986. It was based on events from January until late April (initial reports of Chernobyl). If a second season does occur, then would it be based for the remainder of the year? Even though more “bigger events” did occur in the first half of the year…
The rise or fall in a “younger” newsreader duo? We see another side to William McInnes’ character perhaps?
I was thinking that a second season might look more at events from around the 1987/88/89 timeframe. Then maybe if the series goes long enough, perhaps there’ll be seasons of The Newsreader based in the 1990s and Early 2000s.
Good to know there is more they can do with the series if another season is green lit, can’t see why ABC wouldn’t do that given how well it’s been received.
Interesting comment in that article too
“And also, just on a practical level, I originally was developing it for eight episodes. And then we were commissioned for six. So I already had thought of additional stories.
