The Newsreader

Season 3

We first met Dale Jennings (Sam Reid) and Helen Norville (Anna Torv) in 1986 when a fledgling Dale was desperate to be a star newsreader, and Helen was fighting to be taken seriously as a journalist…

…now, in season three, Dale and Helen have finally achieved both these long held dreams. Dale is News At Six’s ‘King of News’, and Helen’s fearless international reporting has won her great acclaim… But when a cynical network move sees the two former lovers pitted in direct competition, their kinship will be tested as never before.

Over the course of 1989, Helen and Dale will compete to cover a cascade of historical events… from the Exxon Valdez oil spill, to the Tiananmen Square massacre, the boycotts of South Africa’s Apartheid, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Both seasons have been the perfect combo of showing aspects of news coverage it ethics etc and personal stories of the characters. Hopefully they can keep that balance going forward.

William McInnes popped up on Today Extra - the caption writer took some liberties with “inspired by Channel 9”… As he said on the show his is based on a composite of news executives from the time.

I’d love if they do a season 4 that jumps forward into the 90s.

Well the 90s did follow 1989 so if it does have another season then that’s where they’ll go. But what was so significant in the 1990s?

There was the recession in 1990
State Bank Collapsed in SA in 1991
Royal Drama in 1992

And that’s just some of early 1990s

No offence but a recession and a bank collapse is not rivetting stuff to portray in a drama.

What happened with the royals? Their divorces?

Fair enough

Yes plus the queen’s annus horribilis speech. She also came to Australia in 1992.

Based on the second season they seem to have moved away from being as focused on the various news events of the time and more on the ethics of news delivery and personal relationships of the characters. This year seems to be using totally OS events for the timeline which is and interesting choice.

I mean like mid 90s, it’d just be a different media landscape they could play with.

Maybe something in 1990 would work better with the Persian Gulf War, a Federal election and the Recession starting.
