Pretty sure last season mentioned Sale of the Century, 60 Minutes and Prisoner.
Randomly on Sale of the Century, I think when Geoff was off sick last season and was watching the bulletin from home, his wife Evelyn said as the news was finishing that Sale was on. I reckon News at Six must run for an hour, like Ten was back in the 80’s (unless Sale was on at 6.30, as ACA didn’t start at 6.30 until 88, and Willisee aired at 9.30 if I’m correct).
And the late night chat show host Gerry is an amalgam of real chat show hosts we had, Don Lane who would sing, Irish comedian Dave Allen and in the closet Graham Kennedy.
With the Christmas season in full swing, the News At Six is approached by Geoff (Robert Taylor) and Evelyn Walters’ (Marg Downey) daughter Kay (Philippa Northeast) who offers to sell her story of her addiction to heroin. Lindsay (William McInnes) sees an opportunity to close out the year with a show-stopper and instructs them to get it at all costs.
But when Helen (Anna Torva) and Noelene (Michelle Lim Davidson) actually interview Kay, they are shocked at the depth of her desperation, and her anger at her parents…
Saw my recording to episode 1 last night and I agree it was a great episode to start season 2.
I notice the tally room scenes were quiet in the background when it was supposed to be quite noisy, given other networks were also there and hundreds of people on the ground floor.
The studio scenes are filmed at NEP in South Melbourne (some decent television history there) while the newsroom scenes are at the site in Brooklyn I believe.
I watched episode 2 tonight on a slight delay after The Voice on Seven finished.
It was an excellent episode. It was less about the coverage of Hoddle Street massacre but more about how News at Six covered the aftermath and how Lindsay got himself into trouble with the network CEO without knowing it.
The battle between stations to be “first on the scene” and that all important “exclusive footage”, which all networks flaunt these days… And that twist with Lindsay getting himself into trouble from the young CEO without knowing. Sneaky!!
The last four episodes of season 2 are now on iview. As much as I want to binge the lot, it’s the only show I get excited about watching at the same every week!
Really loved this season, though it was less about the news than the previous I think. And we eventually got so see at least one of the competition (real) networks.
