That set looks fantastic in the dark and red lighting

11:30pm - why bother

No way this is live at 11.30.

Curious - Why are the actual presenters of the programme not presenting the new season of the programme?

Angela Cox and Michael Usher, who usually present, are presumably on a brief break after filling in for Mark Ferguson over summer.

For the third year in a row I’ll say it… needs to be moved earlier… it would have to rate better than any of the crap that often gets scheduled before it … as @TV.Cynic said, “why bother?” I don’t. If it’s not on by 10.45, I switch off

It purely is ratings.

Airing The Latest at 10pm instead of 11pm will show great ratings and great retention out of whatever program airing at 9pm.

The issue is the average for the whole night. So if someone is watching Kitchen Nightmares, then a sizeable chunk will watch something like First Dates afterward and then The Latest will have good retention out of that show and then people go to bed or whatever.

However, if you show Kitchen Nightmares, then a very good size will watch The Latest and then will completely switch off and the following program (i,e First Dates) would rate poorly. The night average will be brought down.

People are more likely to watch Program A then Program B then News than they would Program A News then program B.

Its even more applicable when the two programs are similar for example US dramas.

If it worked better with the news earlier, I can assure you the networks would do it. Its the dragging down of the whole average of the night that is the issue - not the actual performance of the News.

Didn’t Seven’s Late News regularly air at about 11:30pm before it was axed in 2003?

I remember the reason for its axing being due to the regular late night timeslots, and consequently low ratings. But at the same time, I think Seven needed to beef up its news resources if they wanted to challenge Nine, which they started doing at the same time with the recruitment of Ian Ross and the move to Martin Place, among other things.

7Late News and Nightline were often on really late. 10’s was usually earlier around 10.30.

I know we’ve talked about this before, but I must be the exception.
I will turn off early if the news is scheduled too late… that’s what I want to see before bed. Anyone who works a standard work day won’t stay up to watch a bulletin starting at 11.30.
No reason why they couldn’t make the bulletin 45 mins or an hour (like some used to be many years ago) with lighter Hot Topics/panel segment in the middle of the bulletin. That would retain viewers longer and maximise ratings.

EXCLUSIVE:

Seven News presenter Michael Usher will exit late night programme The Latest as production relocates from Sydney.

A Seven spokesperson said, “In March, 7NEWS will shift production and presentation of late-night news program The Latest to its Perth headquarters to streamline efficiencies. For viewers, the format, production quality and integrity of the program will not change.”

Would make sense tho.

Very interesting. Definitely sounds like a cost cutting move. Jesus christ if they’re going to continue with the green screen…
Or could Perth finally be receiving a real set?
Because Seven Perth and production quality do not go together.

Mini Sydney set, similar to the one Brisbane received? Here’s hoping!

It has been nine years since the virtual set originally debuted to coincide with the Osborne Park move in 2015.

Hopefully with production moving we might see Perth implement a new set.

Disappointing that there will be job losses

I’m assuming some staff will need to be added in Perth unless they just show repeated reports from state editions.
