The Future of TV - Linear vs. Streaming and beyond

Do we think it’s time for networks to start creating digital news shows?

Not the rubbish that Seven used to put to air on ‘Facebook Watch bulletins’, but actual credible news that would be shown at 6pm, but made for Facebook and/or YouTube. Live streaming, with clips available to watch at any time.

Seven and Nine could even remove their news content off 7plus and 9Now and create a 7news and 9news app, where you go to get the latest news videos and articles.

Alan Jones might be onto something with his new digital show he’s just premiered.

10 should definitely make one, updated 2-3 times a day.

You could argue that FTA TV and radio stations should not be able to disable themselves on platforms like TuneIn etc or force other apps to close down.

It’ll be a few years before most TV channels switch to streaming exclusively. If only we had a proper NBN

Do you think it’s possible that one day, FTA TV will abandon its terrestrial transmitters, and switch to the internet and satellite delivery only?

Won’t happen in the near future. Viewing habits have changed since Digital TV arrived in 2001.

I do think NBC have the best model with their streaming service Peacock. They have on demand content that you can stream at any time plus they have many “Channels” on it which range from News on NBC News Now to local news to comedy with SNL to crime shows on loop as linear channels. That way if you want something playing in the background without having to choose you can just put a channel on. I feel like 9 would be the best at doing something similar with all the Stan and 9Now content they have.

7 are doing that already, they’re just missing the SVOD content.

Netflix still the undisputed king of streaming while the others with their slow tracking and weekly drop models fight it out for scraps.

Netflix remains the big dog, but man there is barely anything actually worth watching on there. Heaps of dispensible, cheap shows, not much of substance.

That’s okay, I’ll keep subscribing to that garbage.

I’ve noticed the quality and pipeline on Netflix has fallen off a cliff. Other services have better content.

Yep. Not much new that’s enticing. I was lucky enough to take a trip to Instanbul when I last subscribed  much better value!!
