Based on the novel by Helen FitzGerald and written by Jacquelin Perske ( Seven Types of Ambiguity ), the four-part psychological thriller follows the lives of a young couple, Joanna (Jenna Coleman) and her husband Alistair (Ewen Leslie). Joanna and Alistair travel with their baby from Scotland to Australia to see Alistair’s mother, Elizabeth (Stella Gonet) and to fight for custody of Alistair’s daughter Chloe (Markella Kavenagh) against his Australian ex-wife Alexandra (Asher Keddie).However, when their baby disappears, it triggers Joanna’s psychological breakdown and in the glare of global media speculation and judgement, the experience changes her marriage forever.

The series has already aired in Britain and New Zealand, but Australian viewers have to wait until next year to see it. ABC’s Acting Director Entertainment & Specialist, Michael Carrington, explained the delay in an interview on TV Tonight:

The Cry we were involved in very early on and it became a minority co-production between us and the BBC and Synchronicity, which is the producer. That delivered to the BBC in October and it launched brilliantly well there, but we’re not launching until early next year, because that was the right thing to do for Australian audiences.

ABC is thrilled to announce that the hotly anticipated, must-see drama series The Cry will air Sunday 3 February at 8.30pm, with all four episodes available to binge on ABC iview, audiences won’t have to wait for each gripping installment.

Based on the novel by Helen FitzGerald, over six-million people tuned into watch The Cry when it premiered on BBC One last year. Its also notched up a staggering 10 million plus plays via BBCs i-player and gone on to enjoy international critical acclaim airing on the Sundance channel in the US, with audiences and critics alike embracing this enthralling series.
