Ten Sport

The recent coverage that the NRL/AFL deals are more then likely to get extensions and that they’ve been unsuccessful in bidding for other sports (like Cricket) have probably put the writing on the wall. We’ve gone from a situation where in the space of a few years every major sports rights were up for grabs to where we are now where the only stuff that is going to be left is of questionable value.

Hopefully ViacomCBS can direct some of the money that would have been used for sports rights into new content.

Wouldn’t rule them out having a peek at sport/NRL again in 2023, assuming they’re still around. Sounds like Nine is only extended until 2022 at this point.

10 should’ve had the Aussie Open, they were bloody dealt a stinker by the former TA board / management and Seven mismanagement shenanigans! And they clearly had no idea Nine were going to go all out in 2018 and poach the rights from Seven and/or couldn’t afford to match.

The court proceedings / docs / statements showed 10 really wanted it (before BBL days).

10 was also dealt a stinker by the former Cricket Australia management when it tried to bid for the current broadcast rights.
However, I disagree that 10 (and Nine for that matter) should have bid for the Australian Open. It should have stayed at Seven all along so the network could get to celebrate 50 years of coverage in 2024.

Whilst I don’t think any sport ‘should’ stay at a particular network due to heritage reasons, I think Seven would agree with your comment there not only because of that, but also for having a stable platform to launch their new year, something which they haven’t had since losing the AO for the BBL.

As for 10, even if they don’t go for the mainstream sports they should at least consider keeping the Melbourne Cup, since that event isn’t just about horse-racing but also has plenty of entertainment value and events that is worth keeping. Otherwise, if having no sports is the risk 10 want to take, then good luck to them.

Maybe they sacked Matt White because they have had negotiations with a big fish?

Out of all networks, Channel 10 does the best coverage of sport.

I would love 10 to get back the footy but both rugby codes and cricket appear more likely.

Maybe ViacomCBS is going to trial the Channel 5 model until the NRL/AFL/Cricket rights come up again, then go all in if it doesn’t work?

Although, in the few moths prior to the completion of the merger, CBS bought a few different sports’ rights (National Women’s Soccer League, UEFA Champions League+Europa League, renewed NFL rights, etc.), but have been quiet since the merger (prior to COVID-19).

Now 10 is owned and ran from the UK, where Viacom has spent the last 15 years without sport, and has had to build a network, Channel 5, on cheap entertainment shows without sport. Viacom, even when given the opportunity to take on sports rights (highlights and coverage), have decided against it because they can be the 5th (ironic) channel in the UK, behind BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, and Channel 4, without sport. In Australia, they can be the 3rd channel without sport, so why would they need to spend money on them. CBS wanted to and was able to spend, spend, spend, as shown by them spending what some would say was too much on the Melbourne Cup Carnival and expressing interest in the NRL and AFL rights.

I pesonally believe that 10 does the best sports coverage and ViacomCBS should really push for either, or both of, the NRL and AFL, or even the A-League. But it seems that those days are over.

But it’s smart of them to cut costs in sport, as they don’t have any major codes and won’t have any until at least 2024, counting on Seven not going under. They can easily hire some freelancers/use their news reporters/presenters on their Melbourne Cup Coverage.

Is there any reason why ten can’t show the CBS rights?

We do have the comm games rights for Birmingham up for grabs

Because they do not own the rights outside of the US. No US sports really rate over here anyway.

Yes, but if they were to, they could potentially use CBS Sports’ broadcast, pre-post show, etc. on 10.

I know that 10 dont have the rights for the AFL anymore, but would they consider having a “Before the Game” type show again on Saturdays? Could be a similar style to Seven’s The Front Bar, where it is more entertainment than a sports show.

And after seeing Roy & HG on Australian Stoey the other night, i was thinking if a network like 10 air a show with there them, or with new hosts, of The Monday Dump, a show which recapping the weekends sports… in a humorous way. Would be better than Sports Tonight, a show i loved in its hey day, where it is now dumped to late in night with ZERO publicity.

You could have ‘The Footy Project’ at 6.30pm Saturdays, following the extended 10 News First.

They have loads of appropriate talent - Peter Helliar, Tommy Little, Beau Ryan, Fitzy, Emma Lawrence etc. You could even do a localised version for NSW/QLD and VIC/SA/WA.

Then just chuck on a movie at 7.30

Not a great idea IMO.
Channel 7 already have a similar show at the same time and the possibility of a SA/WA based teams playing a live game.
Not to mention a live game on Fox Footy too.

What have they got to lose?

might give them a better shot at challenging cash strapped Seven for the next rights deal

Money?

But they’re not interested in the rights if they’re getting rid of sports. No use in going for that market with programming if they have no intention of getting the rights.

Money? Not an issue.

They didn’t get that way by throwing money away.

Exactly, and nor is that money going to be directed to Australia for every hair-brained idea this thread might have.
