In all honesty, I think this is one of the biggest fallacies in the Australian FTA tv market.

Just look at the average ratings of TV over the past few decades, and people have been switching off in droves - far more than just a “change in viewing habits” can attest for.

The commercial networks have filled their schedules with pathetic “reality” tv and poor quality news services, both of which have become more and more sponsored and advertising obsessed.

This is an issue spanning years of poor decision making and ratings statistic abuse.

So, in a way, I agree that they’re going to struggle to get an audience back… I just don’t believe that appealing to “the widest audience possible” is a truth.

I don’t know what use the prime time promos are that have been running tonight - back to the pre-launch generic “more of the headlines” and “the truth comes first”. They need to be running story-specific promos. And forget the “truth” tagline. Viewers can’t handle the truth

Are they telling the truth or giving the tabloids??

Change in viewing habits is incredibly broad language, but it we are going to use that metric and you’re talking decades here - a huge number of reasons contribute - the internet (even pre-streaming era) obviously being a defining one but other societal changes around the way we live our lives have made linear TV just one of the options to spend an evening rather than necessarily the default.

Why do you think commercial TV networks exist? They’re trying to present the biggest number of eyeballs for advertisers to hawk their products to. Yes, some target different demos or use multichannels in a bid to get more of a certain slice of pie but none of them can afford to be running high cost Australian news content for 150k viewers a night.

An hour of hard hitting current affairs is a noble act but if the eyes aren’t there, neither are the ads and that’s what commercial TV runs on.

My argument isn’t against the need for advertising, it’s a necessary element for sure.
My point is that QUALITY and OFFERING of broadcast has been a forgotten element more and more over the years, and my opinion is that this is what has turned audiences away for years and years.

Another way of looking at it would be to say that the biggest audience to appeal to would be the millions of viewers that no longer watch free to air because it frankly sucks.

Could a problem of News+ be that the commercial networks have forgotten how to make quality news shows with journalistic integrity as a central element?
(I say this with no disrespect to the staff making the show, it’s obviously a generalised statement)

I think in this case…its 10 who cant handle the truth.

They’re back to the pre-launch ads, because it generated so much talk on the “yeah” and “here” - and any talk is good, right :stuck_out_tongue:

We did say 10 need to re-launch this, but that implied re-launching with major changes, not just re-launching the same thing again!

There’s an element of that. But there’s a truth that while people say they want high brow stuff when it comes to actually watching it they don’t. This has always been true.

bring on TT and ACA

I find the flow really great after watching the daily news for 1 hour prior to then watch stories with depth afterwards as opposed to another rehash of the same stories for another 30 min or 1 hour really refreshing. The hosts are getting a lot more comfortable, as well the addition of the incredible experience they have both had is making the show unique and long overdue from the fluff of shows like the project which was basically the cheap seats.

During tonight’s opener, once they opened to the shot of them in studio Denham said “Welcome to Plus”.

Sounded interesting.

10 leaning on former Reporter / Presenter Amanda Hart in Hawaii tonight in light of the Tsunami warnings in the area, given she’s based there with her family now.

Edit:

Our very own @Leo_Puglisi6 on the show tonight, offering his thoughts on the new YouTube ban.
