Well all this talk about choppers is that ten needs them. I’ve seen a few stories I’m the past year where seven and nine have aerial footage and ten are devoid of it. Or they should invest in drones.
Drones are illegal unless pilots are employed who are certified and accredited with the relevant authorities.
Anybody can buy and fly a drone without a license for non-commercial purposes.
For commercial purposes it’s just a matter of doing the training and getting your license. It’s not hugely expensive and any cameraman could do it but I doubt Ten would bother. The choppers are useful because they can go absolutely anywhere and can get there quickly. A drone isn’t going to be much use during bushfire season or if there’s a big pile up and traffic is gridlocked meaning a van can’t get there.
It is time consuming and a costly exercise. Check out the CASA requirements:

Not only all of that is required, but the operator must be accompanied by a camera man so the pilot’s focus is on flying the aircraft. UAV licenses also forbid flight within 30 feet of people, no flight over roads and no flying with 5 nautical miles of an active aerodrome. It’s just not worth the hassle.
Another TEN Eyewitness News promo, this time for a ‘Medical Exclusive’ regarding back pain.
Keep 'em coming!
If the launch of TEN HD leads to an on air refresh, do we think Eyewitness News could receive one too? Or if the logo changes, will they just update that aspect of the news package?
Maybe DD8 (the design company responsible for Ten’s 2013 logo change and their current news graphics among other great work) has something planned? Who knows.
Ten is now uploading full bulletins (for each city) to their website.
Chopper not appearing on Ten News Melbourne tonight, due to the extrene heat and now rain approaching.
Happens quite regularly when the weather is unsafe for flying.
They had aerial pictures of the crane fire on St Kilda Rd and Raf Epstein spoke with the channel 9 chopper pilot. So someone must be flying.
most probably before severe thunderstorm warnings were issued. Or, the chopper had a mechanical problem due to the extreme heat. Anything is possible.
Just because one chopper is flying, doesn’t mean they all will.
It’s interesting you mention that.
Because 774 ABC Melbourne’s traffic reporter (who’s on the VicRoads cameras & feeding the traffic reporters back at Essendon Airport studio/hanger) said “I’ve got the chopper hovering over the bushfire and closures…”.
Which was down on the Mornington Peninsula, 1hr from the city, at around 4:15pm.
10min later, Nine Afternoon News had the traffic report from that scene.
20min after that, the chopper was back on the tarmac for Seven Afternoon News, with that traffic reporter saying “grounded due to extreme heat and approaching rain”.
And then there were no traffic reports during Ten News of course.
So very weird. I mean why have the ATN chopper up btw 4pm-4:30pm (for Nine) when it was HOTTER… Yet ground it again for Seven & Ten.
The traffic network choppers fly using what’s called ‘VFR’ or visual flight rules… that means they have to see where they are going (unlike most commercial aircraft which use ‘IFR’ or instrument flight rules… pilots can rely on instruments to tell them what’s around them.)
Most likely a thunderstorm warning was issued at 4.20pm and the pilot decided it was too risky to continue flying… or they had run out of fuel (as is the case in Brisbane, they have to refuel between crosses for Seven & Ten.) and on landing it was deemed too hazardous to resume flight operations.
News not happening in Sydney and Melbourne again next weekend. Events must just suspend themselves in those cities, but ten will run news in the other markets.
Idiots.
I know we go though this every single time that Ten runs a major event on weekends, but it’s absolutely ridiculous how Ten Eyewitness News more often than not becomes “Ten Nowitness News” in the two biggest markets whenever there’s sport on weekends.
How are viewers supposed to rely on Ten’s weekend and even weekday news service when it’s only on “when it feels like”?
When they have 3 channels at their disposal there is absolutely no excuse to not broadcast a news bulletin.
Ten News has apologised for Adam Walters reports on David Ipp.
Should have been Walters reading the apology considering he balls up the facts so badly.

[/quote]So true.
It seems so suss with the whole former relationship too. Really unlike Ten to hold a bias like that in their news service- hoping it was just him that led it all
