I remember during the Ten News Revolution era of 2011-12 there was a separate set used for the Evening News in Sydney, and I also remember seeing an overhead shot of both that and the 5:00pm set when Bill and Deb crossed to Sandra Sully for a preview of the evening news (which didn’t last long), thus showing off the large studio space. There was a photo of it on the old Media Spy page from many years ago.
Also, by July 2011 there was a new set in Sydney which closed off the newsroom and used some incredibly tight camera angles:

I wonder if this set was still based in that large area I mentioned, or in another studio within Pyrmont altogether.
I also know that by June 2012 the newsroom would be seen in the set again; that would’ve been when the Late News was revived after its 2011 axing.

Despite all the ups and downs of this era, god I loved everything about this look.
Graphics, theme, set designs in each state.
Also really liked this set they used. Was quite versatile for other shows like Sports Tonight too.

Was there any reason why the 11.30am news came from the Melbourne newsroom? Could they not opt to use the 5.00pm set?

I am not sure. It seemed to be a vehicle for David Johnston in Melbourne (and later, Jason Cameron, before it was moved to Sydney with Tracey Spicer and Natarsha Belling). I quite liked the newsroom ‘set’ - it gave it a dynamic, organic feel.

From what I know The 11.30am News commenced in 1994 with David Johnson based out of the Melbourne newsroom. Jason Cameron took over in 1996 and read the 11.30am news up until 2000. The 11.30am news was then moved to Sydney in 2001 with Tracy Spicer/Natarsha Belling taking over.
I would say GMA played a part in the bulletin coming out of Melbourne throughout the 90s, as they would’ve used the same control room etc. But yes, I don’t understand why they opted for David to just sit on a seat in the middle of a newsroom.

I’ve seen video of it being done from Sydney in the late 90s with Tracey, maybe the move was 98 or 99.

Sadly I think Ten went downhill when they sacked all those experienced presenters at the end of 2012, all this coming on the back of the failed Breakfast experiment that year and the downgrade of the so-called Ten News Revolution in 2011.
And as we all know too well, things got worse with the centralization of the local bulletins in 2020, most of which was fully reverted just recently with the exception of the Adelaide bulletin being presented from Sydney.

He presented 6pm with George Negus during the Ten News Revolution of 2011.

To later be renamed “6:30 with George Negus” following a timeslot change (and the axing of the Evening News on weeknights).
It did well to last 200 episodes but was never going to beat ACA and Today Tonight.

For comparison sake, how did 6PM / 6.30 rate in their timeslots? Must’ve been extremely low to see its axing at the end of the year.

From what I can recall, the debut episode rated north of 500,000, but subsequently the ratings went south, triggering the timeslot change.
Things didn’t improve after that, and by October the show would become history.

The quality of that show was very very good. It wasn’t tabloid and quite high brow for a show on commercial tv. The country were never going to take 10 seriously when it came to current affairs.
