Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo

The show resumes on Nine on Wednesday, May 20 with episode 7.

As much as this is a decent show, I doubt the ratings will be too flash on Wednesday, since they basically took it off Saturdays and reinstated it on a different night.

This is the problem with networks. They pull shows off-air as they’re airing and then later reinstate them on a different day/different slot and expect viewers to follow them there. If shows stayed in a particular day/slot all the time and it wasn’t so hard to follow then shows would still rate well.

So 6 episodes aired on Saturdays (with good ratings overall). And then had a quite a few weeks “break”. Now with A Currwnt Affairs on Saturdays, occupying its slot, its now moved on Wednesdays . It should have aired on Saturdays at 7.30 ( after ACA) or on Fridays replacing " Escape to the Chateau ", which doesnt seem to rate that well

Episode 7
Wednesday 20 May at 7.30pm

No part of Taronga’s sprawling 28 hectares – set on spectacular Sydney Harbour – is off limits in this gripping series which tracks the 240 keepers and vets who care for more than 4500 animals.

The zoo story resumes with new stars: a chimpanzee who really needs to have a baby – and a very randy panda who has just fathered three!

Meet Naomi, a 17-year-old chimpanzee from Denmark who has resided at the zoo since 2015. Naomi is a very maternal female who has been unsuccessful in her attempts at giving birth despite falling pregnant twice. With her genetics vital to this endangered species, Taronga Zoo must find out what is preventing her from having a baby.

Meanwhile back at the “Panda Pad”, keepers are faced with the opposite problem. Pabu, an endangered red panda, has just fathered a family of three. Although he is part of a breeding program his partner must be given time to raise their young – but Pabu doesn’t want to wait. The team need to find a way to stop this randy boy from breeding again.

We also take viewers into the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre where a badly injured boobook owl needs to learn to fly again. The veterinarian and the zoo keepers will attempt to do everything they can to help this patient soar in the wild once more.

Episode 8

On this episode, keepers prepare to move their 3 giraffes to a brand-new enclosure. But the entire move is put on hold, as Taronga staff are shocked by the rapid decline of Nyota, one of the zoo’s favourite giraffes.

Episode 9
Wednesday 3 June at 7.30pm

In this episode, a mysterious virus threatens to wipe out an entire species of snapping turtles; An injured fiordland crested penguin arrives from Melbourne Zoo, but will it settle in and call Taronga home?

Episode 10
Wednesday 10 June at 7.30pm

On this episode, vets have to perform emergency surgery on a Tree Goanna, after a member of the public brought it into the wildlife hospital with a particularly unusual injury.

Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo returns for another heartwarming season

Friday, October 7, at 7:30pm

The magnificent world of wildlife will come to life on our screens again when Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo returns for its third season from Friday, October 7, at 7.30pm on Channel 9HD and 9Now.

This extraordinary series captures the animal kingdom in two of Australia’s largest zoos, Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

Dual Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts will continue as the narrator for this award-winning observational documentary series.

In 2022, Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo picks up where the last season left off, attempting to leave the COVID-19 pandemic behind and look to a brighter future. With unrivalled access to the keepers, vets and support staff, we will follow them through all the high and lows that come with running one of the most successful zoos in the world.

At the forefront and focus of everything they do are the animals. From breeding the rarest rhinoceros in the world, leading the way in conservation and research programs and feeding more than 5,000 residents a day, to celebrating the birth of five lion cubs and saying goodbye to old friends, nothing is more important than upholding the vision and living the philosophy of Taronga’s key mission: working together to ensure a shared future for wildlife and people.

Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo is produced by McAvoy Media for the 9Network.

EPISODE 1 – “LION CUBS" FRIDAY OCTOBER 7 AT 7.30PM ON CHANNEL 9 AND 9NOW

A historic moment for Taronga as Lioness Maya gives birth. It’s Sydney’s first lion cub birth in nearly 20 years, and keepers soon discover, it’s the gift that just keeps on giving.

Maya is not the only one surprising staff during the spring baby boom, as Jilly the Tammar Wallaby delivers her second joey, and in doing so, reveals one of the quirkiest breeding processes you’ll ever see.

And staff take on the massive job of cleaning Seal Bay, by replacing more than a million litres of seawater, directly from Sydney Harbour.

There was an ad for this Friday’s episode, and was quite good. They showed a news clip of the “lion escape” that occurred late last week at Taronga Zoo. It then went on to mention the lions family and talk about their time in the zoo. Obviously the episode was filmed some time ago, so not sure if the actual lion escape will feature in the show.

Its not often they hype up a show that airs on Friday nights, but with the recent news, then why not. Kudos for Nine for doing it.

I don’t know why they didn’t show some of the footage on that morning or during the day. I mentioned it on the day.

Giraffe Jimiyu requires the biggest team ever assembled of vets, nurses, keepers, specialists, and backyard crew to ensure he makes it through a dangerous general anaesthetic procedure. And with the vision of working to ensure a shared future for wildlife and people, we go into the field with Taronga’s conservationists and see the opening of the latest jewel in Taronga’s crown, an exclusive native animal habitat called Nura Diya Australia.

EPISODE 1: “GIRAFFE JIMIYU”

In one of the biggest vet procedures ever performed at Taronga Zoo nearly 30 staff and specialists are involved in the risky sedation of their 5½ metre-tall giraffe Jimiyu. A lot rides on keeper Jimmy being able to calmly lead Jimiyu into a barn where he will be darted with a strong sedative ahead of the procedure.

The public are invited to vote on the name of a cute new arrival, a one-month-old fur seal pup already winning the hearts of the marine team.

And Taronga’s brand-new exhibit – Nura Diya Australia – is only weeks away from its scheduled opening. With 14 species of native animals to source and move into the kangaroo and wallaby walk, a tree-top koala encounter, a dingo habitat and a new nocturnal exhibit, the race is on to get everything ready in time for the big day.

The cheeky eldest son of Kibali, the silverback gorilla, is due for his first health check. He may only be 44 kilos, but MJ is already much stronger than an adult human, so the keepers need to make sure they administer the hand injection sedative correctly.

Tassie devils may be solitary creatures, but they will tolerate others at a push. That’s not the case with the 4 devils at Western Plains Zoo and everyone is pointing the finger at a feisty female called Bronte. A decision needs to be made about how to stop the fighting.
