I do. It’s generally quicker & you don’t have to talk to anyone (can keep earphones on if you want). No one to judge me for buying 80% junk food.
Next generation self serve might in the future lol
Exactly.
The full trolley, yeah I’ll definitely use a full service checkout. That’s basically the only situation in which you’d need a human operator to process things quickly.
If no one prefers using them, why are they so busy at my local supermarket where there’s always an empty full service and express checkout lane?
The original article had a quote that said
Canstar Blue found that nine in 10 Aussie shoppers aged 18 to 39 preferred to stay “in the zone” and shop without personal service.
“Younger people prefer to be in their own little world, wearing headphones, in the zone, when they don’t have to relate to people,” Simon Downes of Canstar Blue said.
will those same young people then wonder why job opportunities for young people are diminishing when supermarkets scale up to more self-service check outs and cut back more positions.
I won’t use the self-service. Happy to keep someone employed and also they’re not giving me a discount for doing their job for them.
People probably said the same thing 50 years ago when full service petrol stations, lift attendants and tram/bus conductors were on their way out.
And ATM’s meant that 87% of bank tellers disappeared in a decade.
If I have a basket I do - but then again I worked as a Checkout Dude when I was at school (which was a while ago now) - ive retained the skill to pack a bag and scan barcodes pretty well
If they were all like aldi and I could pack my bags myself, then I’d be okay using the regular checkouts. But I don’t want them badly packing my bags for me.
Really? Self service alllllllllll the way. If I have to go through a ‘real’ checkout - I tend to avoid the store.
Drives me nuts that Target don’t have them. Anyone know why this is?
There is always a queue in my local Coles in Glen Waverley for the self-serve!
I hate the way Aldi’s cashiers just throw your shopping back into the trolley you took it out of a minute ago. It must be the only business model where the staff can’t be bothered putting your purchases in a bag. So rude. So Aldi.
Last time I shopped at a Coles store after 7pm they had the self service checkouts closed and one cashier working at a register. There was a long queue at that one checkout by the time I’d picked up the few items I wanted so I ended up dumping the basket and walking out in disgust.
Anarchist. I always wondered what sort of people did that sort of thing and now I know.
Yeah. I’m that sort of person that refuses to wait 20 minutes to pay for a few groceries. They should close the damn store if they can’t afford to staff it properly or won’t pull someone from another area to open a checkout.
I’ll never abuse the staff over such matters. Not their fault. Have been on the receiving end of such abuse when I worked in customer service roles in my youth. I rarely complain. I just make a mental note not to go back. Coles and Woolies are as bad as each other but I know if I go to my local Woolies after 7pm I’m more likely to get in and out in a reasonable amount of time.
Franklin’s used to also do this in their “Franklin’s No Frills” stores. I remember having to help mum bag the groceries at the Willows store in Townsville, near Ayr.
The Woolies I work at was like that as well before we got self-serve checkouts. Only one manned express checkout open after 9pm meant very long queues at times, which has led to customers doing the basket dumping and walking out.
The Woolies stores I frequent at that time of day tend to leave their self service checkouts open. I don’t know why Coles can’t do the same. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting stuck behind people with trolleys full of stuff when all you want to buy is bread, milk and a few other items. I don’t like to dump a basket and walk out but nobody wants their time wasted unnecessarily after a long day.
Coles used to as well, but I get the feeling that closing off the self-serves must be part of an SoP or something. The worst I’ve seen of that recently is with weekends here in Perth (where we are still stuck with archaic 5pm closing times), they are starting to close off the self-serves early while there is still an enormous line 10-15 customers deep waiting for one… contradicts the advertised checkout (all checkouts open between Noon-5pm on weekends) policy that many Coles here are pushing at the moment.
The Woolworths at Cooleman Court at Weston Creek in Canberra only has the self-serve open after about 8:00pm until closing at 10:00pm. Entry and exit is only via the self-serve lane, so it can get congested if there is a few customers.
