Coles just removed the orb from a couple of the external signs at Kings Langley.

The Mirrabooka Coles had a major refurb this year. Sections were closed off for some time while they built the new look stores departments into the old store (Deli with the black brick, open bakery etc). It used to be an eyesore of a store however is now my Coles of choice.

Morley is probably waiting for the Galleria redevelopment. I am surprised Kmart haven’t updated their yet either - however also probably awaiting the redevelopment.

I saw an ex-Dick Smith store today has been taken over by Betta (Home Living) - it was all white goods, kitchean appliances, TVs, radios etc

Meanwhile in the US:

Story from 2010 about the last Holly’s restaurant inside Kmart closing. I didn’t know the last one had survived that long. I remember the one at the Fairfield Forum in Sydney, it was on par with the Woolworths and Coles cafeterias in the Sydney CBD.

Wow. I had no idea it had survived that long. Last one I remember seeing closed up at least 15 years ago, but probably closer to 20.

Even worse…

A store near me (Mt Eliza, VIC) has the old “Safeway” beanding :fearful:

That’s pretty pathetic.

No wonder Woolworths Ltd are a fail at the moment…

Coles Group (Wesfarmers) must be all smiles over thr past couple of years

Kohl’s?

Sound it out - I have heard adverts for this on US radio and thought it was associated with the supermarket here.

ah i get it now I just didn’t see the link between that and Dick Smith/Betta

Maybe we’re going to see a revival of that kind of thing - the new-ish Target in Werribee has an in store cafe - despite being smaller than most other Target stores.

The one near me is still unchanged - the Dick Smith logo is still up and looks like no one has touched it since they closed.

I remember they had crinkle cut hot chips in the old Kmart cafe’s correct? Hard to remember as I was a young kid in the early 90s.

As does the refurbished Target at Chatswood and the new IGA supermarket which opened in the MLC Centre at Martin Place in Sydney. They’ve also started putting cafe bars in City Convenience Stores which are a local version of 7Eleven.

Indeed

Continuing on with my post about tired old shopping centres, there’s another time warp which I’d recommend people visit in Sydney - it’s the main Eastwood shopping centre. The car park has disused traffic signals from the 1960s. The lifts are antiques. A former Target is now a daggy (but fairly well stocked and good value) variety store and furniture shop. And yes, there’s a Woolworths which is decaying similarly to the Eastlakes one.

I came across a video from 1988 of what the shopping centre looked like. And, no kidding, it looks absolutely identical today, except for the shop signs which usually now feature Asian script. Some people who were from the area who saw it were pretty shocked at how…Anglo it once was.

One of the most irritating & annoying (but one of the most successful & long-running) marketing campaigns ever…

“DOWN, DOWN”

Cadbury chocolates in K Mart? I suppose they are worried that Aldi shoppers may go into K Mart and steal something they can only dream about - a branded product.

Yas! Crinkle cut chips with gravy. A bread roll with butter (so fancy) and self serve choc milk as you went to pay.

The best.

I believe from memory that Coles did use the orb logo for a very brief period with the New World being in red font. But the New World was dropped quite quickly after the logo change. May have been just as a transition to ease in the new look.
