Supermarkets and Retail (2015-2025)

Just to clarify, both Woolworths and Big W have had self service checkouts here for a few years now, they’ve just gone even further.

Possibly.. helps me to keep looking beautiful when I’m shopping too

I’m in New Zealand on holiday. Nice to see a familiar brand.

So there no longer count down over there?

In early 2024, the chain rebranded from countdown to Woolworths.

They rebranded and consolidated the brands to just Woolworths in NZ.

Australian Everyday Rewards cards are also accepted here. 1 point per NZ$ spent - but you can’t collect or redeem NZ fuel vouchers or app boosts.

Yes and no, I like seeing different brands when overseas eg. Walgreens or Trader Joes in the US instead of Coles and Woolworths. Makes me feel more like I’m actually overseas.

But still, it was a nice surprise to see a Harvey Norman store in Singapore when I was there in 2018, that was totally unexpected.

I always love exploring the supermarkets overseas haha just to see the differences… Fun fact though: Trader Joes is a sister company of Aldi.

I always randomly like it when I stumble across a Cotton on overseas. I get a bizarre kind of pride.

looks like you can buy lottery tickets at woolies over there but you cant here

Some Woolies NZ locations also have in-store pharmacies. Fascinating stuff.

Target Charlestown (Newcastle) is closing 15th
November. It will be a Kmart Conversion.

Target Earlville (Cairns) will close 31st December. Centre redevelopment, so essentially kicked out at end of lease you could say.

BIGW Parkmore will close 26th October, end of lease.

So will 95 per cent of the Target stores in Shopping centres around Australia that don’t have any other Department store and/or DDS offering in them.

The first of many stores to open up around Victoria after the complete disappearance of Ventures during 1994-95 when the state only boasted 4 Big W stores (Karingal Frankston, Highpoint Maribyrnong, Southland Cheltenham and Shepparton).

My local. Good to know, wasn’t aware of this.

I’ll be interested to see how long it takes for the conversion to be done.

Kmart used to be here years ago before the centre got redeveloped in 2010.

It’s a bit strange as it seems like it has only just been announced, I thought they would have traded through peak and perhaps done it after the rush in Jan. I assume they have Christmas stock in the store?

Even a lease renewal any centre would be mad to have a big box retailer closed during peak. I don’t quite understand this one, unless they intend on getting Kmart open in a couple of weeks.

I wonder which Target is next in the firing line. I’d say they would have a few dozen they intend to close without converting when the lease dries up. They could end up with 50 odd stores.

Though my local centre has nearly 300 retailers and plenty of other major tenants like MYER, H&M, JB Hifi, Reading Cinemas, Big W and the 3 major supermarket chains, so they wouldn’t be as heavily impacted as a smaller development like a Centro or Stockland would be.
