Supermarkets and Retail (2015-2025)

I think as others have said, seems to be an increasing trend.

One floor of Myer Cairns Central became Woolworths
Target Waverley gardens is becoming Aldi and other food retailers
Myer Knox is becoming Woolworths and food precinct.
And not the same, but Target Ringwood Square became a rather interesting Bunnings.

How bizarre.

I’ve seen small-format Bunnings’ before, but not sure I have seen one actually inside a shopping centre before. Is anybody aware of any others?

Considering Bunnings Nunawading is 7 minutes away it’s a strange decision.

The only Bunnings store I’ve seen with a very low and dropped ceiling.

Looks like one of those Homebase store conversions they did over in the UK. Just looks plain weird.

That’s just really weird

I would imagine it would have something to do with a very long Target lease that they couldn’t exit. Kmart are across the road so really only Bunnings left if they are trying to stem red ink from Target.

It was built in 1981. See below

This was my local Bunnings growing up (Gordon, NSW) -

i

It’s a two storey store squeezed into a shop front on the Pacific Highway, formerly a Hardwarehouse from memory. They are replacing it with a proper full-line warehouse store about 1km up the road later this year.

There are a few small bunnings around, Gordon, Randwick. I know Randwick was a BBC hardware back in the day I would say the same is true for Gordon. But yes haven’t seen any in a shopping centre.

The predecessor to Bunnings in Melbourne, McEwans had a number of shopping centre anchor locations, but Bunnings pulled out of those relatively quickly after acquistion.

In Perth, they used to be an anchor of the Peppermint Grove shopping centre, previously held by Harvey Norman and Harris Scarfe prior to that.

The Claremont location also used to be a small scale shopping centre before Bunnings took the lease for almost the entire building, moving from their tiny, crowded space in the same carpark (which is now a Petstock location)

There is also a Target at Eastland. If I recall correctly, target Ringwood square closed as the one in Eastland opened.

And Boans before that! Not sure if it was ever badged Myer though.

Myer in Westfield Hurstville was converted into a Woolworths on one level and a Big W on the other.

Even that BIGW looks weird. Different paint, floors and it looks more crammed in, small entrance also. Compared to looking at the standard Bigw which Is white tiles, walls, tall ceiling, aisle are sort of straight.

JB HI-FI is also in the space where Myers once was (to the left of Woolworths).

On the other side of the Woolies (to the right) is an ALDI. Prior to Aldi being in that spot was a clothing store (was it Glue?) which was preceded by Toys R Us.

Yes, that’s right. Toys R Us was also on two levels. I think the other level is all specialty shops now.

We now have Direct to Boot in Yeppoon but no longer have pick up - instore.

So is it the same as Coles they will put everything in the car and in bags? When I go to Coles I end up helping put stuff in the bags with the other person and lifting bags into the car.

Have not been into Sydney since the pandemic however I’ve read that Woolworths is reconfiguring it’s Town Hall store.

B/G Floors- Woolworths
1/2/3 BIGW

I reckon that’s a wise move considering the city has zero presence of a Target or Km. The ability for those two to try and get a site is probably zero also.

This makes a lot of sense considering the floors with variety merchandise were essentially Big W in all but name, and people who were unaware of the store layout would never know this unless they regularly visited.

The BIGW in Brisbane CBD is across many floors also so it’s definitely doable. The Melbourne city store is underground. That would make them the only discount department store with a CBD store in the big three cities.

Does it mean the bottom two floors will basically become Woolworths Metro? Is the cafe on level 3 still operating?

Those floors have been closed off for a while I was wondering why.

Well Aldi the rumours have turned out to be false. Broadmeadows Central posted on social media that Sacca’s will be relocating to the former BigW space.

ANNOUNCEMENT | The secret is out, Sacca’s will be relocating to the former Big W space. They will be broadening their offer to cater for the local community, this includes: butcher, café, fish, florist, gelato and liquor - in addition to their high-quality fruit and vegetable produce.
