I wonder how many of the outraged voted for the current government though? They knew what they were voting for.

It’s something I’ve wondered about quite a bit recently, even though I do agree with the many who say that the current NSW (and Federal but of course that’s another story) Government is absolutely pathetic.

People had their opportunity to make changes earlier this year, they chose not to. Like it or not, we’re just going to have to deal with it until the next Election(s)!

Money from the government (state and federal) have been spent on stadiums in NSW for many years. Parramatta Stadium was demolished and rebuilt, with little “anger”. Kogarah Oval has had renovations in the 2000’s, helped from the governemt. The Ken Rosewell Arena (aka the tennis centre at Homebush) has had a roof installed this year (nearing completion, i think?). But only a big backlash for the SFS has surfaced. Why?

Because it was barely 30 years old and still considered to be a great stadium. Most people didn’t consider it “old” or outdated.

Replacing it is a waste of money. Greedy owners just want to create more private boxes for the rich to isolate themselves from the plebs. And the taxpayer pays for it.

Yes, you are right. Makes sense. It should have only been renovated, rather than demolished and rebuilt.

(i had a mental blank before when i queried why the blacklash. Ive had a busy few days. lol).

Except in this case it can’t - when the government sold the land titles office, the proceeds (which are for the stadia rebuilds) was specifically quarantined by restart nsw.

The SFS was terrible and archaic in comparison modern stadia - did it warrant demolition and complete rebuild, probably not

A cheaper refurb could have given it twenty more years. I’m expecting a budget blowout to rival the $1 billion extra spent on the $2 billion light rail.

Have they even done the design first?

Here’s the latest news about it.

Construction giant John Holland was this morning confirmed as the new contractor for the Moore Park stadium’s construction after Lendlease in July walked away from the beleaguered project.

The Berejiklian government is facing a backlash from key tenants of the new Sydney Football Stadium after a multi-mode “curtain” was not included in final construction plans despite a cost blowout of $99 million.

Parranatta Stadium itself was fully rebuilt from the ground up in 1986, it was only two years older than the Sydney Football Stsdium.

I also don’t see the point in knocking down a stadium of only that age and replacing it with one of the same size. I think they both should have been refurbished.

At least with the Olympic Stadium at Homebush, that will be a refurb, but bizarrely with a reduced seating capacity in a city that will only get bigger.

That’s because it only fills up 3 times a year for NRL SOO, GF and Au v NZ RU

The new North Queensland Stadium (Queensland Country Bank Stadium) opens in Townsville today. Yesterday, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has unveiled a life-sized bronze statue of rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston outside the stadium. You may remember a couple of years ago, there was a April Fool’s Day joke that Townsville City Council was planning a bronze statue to honour Thurston for his wonderful career at the Cowboys including the 2015 NRL premiership. Now that has become a reality.

And a much better name than 1300 Smiles Stadium!

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has abandoned a controversial $810 million redevelopment of Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, as part of spending cuts stemming from COVID-19. But The Sunday Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield warns the move could see the NRL Grand Final moving north to Brisbane.
