That really is an excellent discovery, well done.

You really ought to be commended for the effort you put into documenting and saving footy history, both for Richmond and for the entire league.

Sports Tonight full bulletin May 2000

I still think Sports Tonight could be relaunched again and run after The Late News.

Wouldn’t stand a chance though, people see their results online nowadays.

The show was full of sports stories filed from that day and interviews. You didn’t tune in for scores

Fox Sports News is still a channel so Sports Tonight could still do well?

That near-midnight standalone bulletin on Fridays (often wondered if it was prerecorded) with Rob Canning and before him Ryan Phelan and Leigh Diffey was a fantastic program, would stay up late just to watch it, for the true sports connoisseur. So many sports stories, many with a filed package from a reporter and often just for that program, as well as Friday AFL/NRL results, more overseas focus, sports affairs pieces, trivia and who can forget ‘Play of the Day’ and the edited montages with the music were great at the open and ender.

The unit was a dedicated team based at TEN-10 Sydney, even if under news and had their own production space and studio and many of its staff were let go in October 2011 after it was axed. The night before the 2011 AFL Grand Final (also Ten’s last AFL) was the final ST, fittingly handed over to Rob from the Late News by original host Tim Webster. Rob also farewelled the various crew and show at the end of the final program, sadly went out with a fizzle to probably not many viewers. This final ep is on YT somewhere too.

Of course ST was spliced with the Late News on Mondays - Thursdays from 2007 (might’ve actually been 2006) with a new team in Brad McEwan (Mon - Thur with Sandra Sully) who moved from TVQ-10 Brisbane and would also later replace a semi-retired Tim Webster on Sydney sport and Rob Canning (Fri - Sun with varying presenters Deb Knight > the late Charmaine Dragun > Kathryn Robinson / Belinda Heggen / Jacqueline Maddock / Tim Webster and on weekends Tracey Spicer > Steve Liebmann / Bill Woods / Natarsha Belling).

I can recall once, the Ten News/Sports Tonight hour aired at 1:00am on a Friday night/Saturday morning. I think it could’ve been on Anzac Day in 2003, after Network 10 aired a rare Friday night match between the Sydney Swans and Melbourne which was played at the SCG (this was because Nine had aired the Anzac Day match between Essendon and Collingwood).
