Yes, the graphics look a little bit different to what TEN used, even though it looked to be an attempt to recreate them… I also note that game was played in Sydney, I didn’t think Capital would have covered away games, but maybe they did some?
Not sure. I wonder if 10 Sydney produced the coverage and Capital just provided commentary.
Just watching Game 4 of the 1987 State of Origin Series and am absolutely shocked by the almost total lack of lighting on the field. My local community sports ground has better lighting.
But was that the general state of stadium lights back in those days? How come broadcasters even put these games to air? Matches from Lang Park also looked pretty gloomy in the 80s. I know that the SCG had to have extra lights installed on the light towers, but I’m not sure whether that was at the behest of the broadcasters or players. At least the SCG was brighter than most.
Yeah, the LED lights they have these days are so much brighter and faster.
The old ‘globes’ used to take 20-30 minutes to warm up to full brightness. If they went off accidentally during play, the game got delayed until the globes got bright enough again. Nowadays the LED lights go to full brightness almost instantly.
Yeah I must say the new lights are alot better. The local bowls club had old school lights that were replaced almost ten years ago now with led and its alot brighter. Radiohead is correct the old lights are a nightmare you pretty much have to turn them on at 5pm to be ready for 6pm.
That’s such an Australianism! I remember when I first arrived a flatmate once asked me ‘Oh you’re heading out, can you please pick me up a globe for my room?’ I was like 'who is this digsy? And what does he need a globe for? I ended up getting him an atlas instead.
Funny thing with night football. We even had North Melbourne who were the ‘night specialists’.
Must have eaten lots of carrots.
There’s some weird stuff in the annals of Australian football history. I remember watching this late at night on QTQ. I never even knew Tangles was a footy commentator! Was it rare to have footy on Nine in those days? I’m guessing so… I’d just arrived in the country and all I wanted to see was some decent Australian rugby.
Still waiting.
That’s Australian Rules, not rugby/rugby league.
Well at that stage the only footy we had in Brisbane was on BTQ, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Steve Robilliard anchoring from the studio.
NWS-9 got the rights to the SANFL back in 1989 in Adelaide (after losing them to ADS-7 in 1982, ADS-10 still had the rights in 1988 despite the channel swap). NWS gave them up for 1993 after the Crows entered the AFL in 1991.
Not sure that would’ve got much play outside of Adelaide.
The 1981 SANFL Grand Final got a bit of interstate coverage.
There’s a Capital Television “Steelers Big Game” Sunday Night sign right near a dotty WIN Television Wide World Of Sports logo, so post-aggregation for sure.
So I’d guess it’s just Capital’s coverage - but I’d assume WIN would have some form of rights to the games as well.
I reckon that’s the Swan Larger airship hiding under that banner. Would make sense given the ownership at the time.
Illawarra and Canberra Capital stations covered their respective teams home games in 89 and 90’. Think the budget cuts forced the Illawarra stuff to go in 91’ but Canberra definitely kept their home games.
That’s pretty impressive coverage for 1981. Great to see Knuckles there. Man he looked old even when he was young. Even the logos on the field look really well done for the time.
Great spot, thanks. Re aggregation it was March 1989 for southern NSW so Capital makes sense given the game would’ve been played mid 1989.
SCG lights had to be brighter simply cause you need very bright lighting to play cricket on.
