Correct me if I’m wrong, but is it only delayed coverage of home matches on a Sunday night?
It might be “only” but I reckon that was pretty good, way better than what we get now, which is virtually nothing.
Better than the current FTA arrangement?
It’s interesting to compare. The Brisbane Bears/early Lions received very little coverage back in the day. VFL/AFL was only broadcast on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Lions had a little UHF aerial atop the social club at the Gabba and we’d all go there on Friday and Saturday nights to watch games on Prime Gold Coast in amongst all the VHF static and ghosting. These days every game H&A is live on FTA.
Remember, this is regional TV we are talking about.
I think regional coverage of Newcastle, Illawarra, Canberra, Melbourne, Gold Coast and North Queensland premiership rugby league matches had ended by the early 2000s?
Yeah, NBN were the last to stop I think, covering Knights home and away games, that was mid 2003 I think… also unusual because that stopped mid season (why I do not know)… From 1995 onwards, they just relayed Pay TV coverage.
Not from this year
I know it’s not regional, but pretty sure all Broncos matches were shown on 9 in Brisbane until 2006
Watching the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish in the Orange Bowl right now and they mentioned how aerial coverage was provided by the Goodyear blimp.
Wow. In this day and age.
Interesting that the Goodyear blimp made its debut at the Orange Bowl all the way back in 1960.
IIRC Goodyear and Whitman’s Chocolates also used to sponsor a blimp that was heavily featured on Seven’s AFL coverage and (maybe even Tennis?) during the late 90’s/early 2000’s
It did.
Other networks used it as well. Was known as the whitmans air ship.
It was used on 10s Melbourne cup coverage for aerial shots in the late 90s.
Became good year blimp around 2000.
Great campaign. Probably due to see it again for another round.
Getting back to sport(s) broadcasting… the greatest thing in sport(s) is surely the Rose Bowl telecast.
Wasn’t it NBN’a cameras who filmed it for them? IIRC they got delayed rights in exchange for doing the pay TV coverage.
NRL Coverage on Nine as well as the Sydney Olympic Games on Seven.
I suppose in a pre-drone era, aerial coverage was seen as quite a broadcast bonus.
I know that Monday Night Football always made a big thing of it. Even when the game was in a domed stadium!
We had this in the past during the Sydney Olympics
With the eve of the Australian Open, this video is a nice way to get into the mood… Still a fantastic ID put together back in 2013 by Seven, edited and replayed each year upon the two finals until 2016. An iconic soundtrack too.
This one is more extended for each year until the early 2000s, but became truncated to squeeze in a few more years to fit the roughly 3min over following years:

There is another one on YT that goes up to 2016.
I do remember the coverage stopping mid 2003 for some reason but NBN did show the last Knights game of the season (from memory it was a Sunday home game which was broadcast that night around 10:40pm).
Yeah, i remember if it was an away Sunday arvo game at 2.30pm, they would show it live and then “crash” into the Nine 4pm game around 4.15pm.
Mike Rabbitt used to do the intros and outros with the Pay TV feed in between.
