Sports Broadcasting History

Also on the subject of Channel 9 broadcasting cricket. I found it intriguing as to why they decided to televise the England vs Pakistan one day series from England in 1992. Can only suspect it had something to do with those two teams having played in the Final of that year’s World Cup

Does anyone know if either Seven or Nine televised the 2003 US Open Tennis Tournament or was it Fox-exclusive? I know that Seven televised Roland Garros with Wimbledon being shown on Nine.

Would of been Nine back then. They tended to show the day sessions to about 6-7am when Today Show started. I’m guessing Fox had the night sessions. I remember that year having a lot of issues with rain.

Seven never had the US Open in my lifetime anyway.

Saw a Western Australian version of the 2003 9WWOS promo on Youtube and there was no mention of US Open Tennis or NRL, but instead we saw AFL Clips of both the WA Teams and Wimbeldon was the only mentioned Tennis-related event.

Probably just not mentioned. They had issues with rain. I remember Nine showing the women’s semis on a Saturday afternoon and then watching the epic semi between Roddick/Nalbandian that ran overtime into Business Today on Sunday morning

IIRC that was the only year Seven had the French Open. Not sure why it was only one year.

When was channel 9 showing MLB?

On Youtube, I came across the final moments of the final time (To date) 10 decently broadcast the Melbourne Cup Carnival in which, was later eventually followed by 17 fantastic years of coverage from Seven that couldn’t be matched right throughout 2019-23 when the event returned to 10.

For 2024-29, can Nine match 10’s coverage from the mid-1990s until 2001 as well Seven’s 17 year run until 2018?

End of 10’s 2001 Melbourne Cup coverage. Surprise they didn’t show the last race live and Tim Webster told viewers to watch it in the news that evening.

IIRC Ten always did that once they moved the news to 5.00 and covered the last race during Ten News. Probably wasn’t worth delaying the news just for the last race which was certainly past peak interest.

I think that the Yankees game might have just been highlights during their Saturday afternoon WWOS show (hence the ‘Coming Up’ text) and the All Stars game was a bit of a one off?

No, Ian Maurice did mention that it was coming up next after the Golf.
Nine seemed to have a triple header for sports that night San Marino Motorcycle GP/British Open/MLB.

IIRC, he once filled in for Kochie on Sunrise in January 2005.

Would have been when CBS were the main rights holder over in the US in the early 90s, ending in 1993

Recently got reminded of Channel 9 telecasting the Aussie tour of the West Indies in 1991. That would have been another one that didn’t affect their prime time schedule as the day’s play started at Midnight AEST and went through the overnight hours.

Pretty sure this was still before the days of the overnight hours being gobbled up by infomercials.

Remember when Channel 9 broadcast The Ashes series from England. Only for one of the tests to get pre empted for Wimbledon.

1989: 3rd Test: Given to the ABC
1993: 3rd Test: Shown on Tape Delay
1997: 3rd Test: Given to the ABC

Don’t know what happened in 1985.
