Thank you so much!
Great find!
Only took 50 years, but here it is.
Ch9’s ENTIRE colour recording of the 1973 VFL Grand Final.
Only ever transmitted in black and white on GF night.
Filmed in colour as a test for colour television the following year.
Director John Crilly confirms to me it was only ever transmitted in colour to his monitors in the OB Van at the MCG on Grand Final. Went out black and white to the television audience.
Have managed to find video footage of the lead-up to a very famous VFL/AFL photo - Robbie McGhie with cigarette in mouth after 1973 Grand Final
I created a little youtube video
On the video:
Circle 1: Robbie McGhie on the ground after 73GF
Circle 2: Trainer Kevin McEvoy w/ cigarettes that he will hand to McGhie
Circle 3: Photographer Rennie Ellis at the ready
Recorded off Prime Ballarat
Although for clarity, this would’ve been the TAC Cup final (ie. the under-18s) with those teams, yes?
I was slightly confused with the VSFL tag - it is correct, but I initially thought it might’ve been the AFL reserves. The newly-formed state operations (“AFL Victoria” now) had already taken over the reserves by then (and replaced the old U/19s with the TAC Cup… of course, it was still “VFL” reserves in a way because SA and WA didn’t want to join), but no-one really called it the former, and I’m not sure they bothered calling it that themselves once they took over the VFA anyway.
Meant you still got the three games on grand final day though. Barely anyone at the ground at 8-ish in the morning! I’m not sure they showed the U18s in the northern states during the 90s, but they did show the reserves at 11am before it was folded back into the modern VFL. (Then we did get the U18s until it became the curtain-raiser to the VFL final the night before instead, which meant it moved to Fox Footy as they were taking that at the time.)
Not many would be there to watch the U18s for sure, but a lot of AFL and MCC Members would go in as the gates opened to reserve their unreserved seats for the day, I think those areas are mostly reserved and balloted these days.
I do miss grand final days if old with the build up if the marathon, then the North Melbourne breakfast and under 19s then reserves.
MCC members still have about 10,000 unreserved walk-ups on the day who need to arrive cc fça
back when the ABC was the home of football/soccer (they had the first division now English Premier League highlights show Match of the Day as well). This went until 1992 when SBS took over the FA Cup and eventually the EPL.
Channel Nine showed the 1988 Fa Cup have some footage of that coming soon
EPL would have been 93/94 - I remember taping the EPL highlights on a Monday night as a kid and watching later in the week. Was a sad day when it moved to SBS (we didnt get SBS until the late 90s, maybe the early 00s)
Here is a clip from Wide World of Sport about the Matilda’s in 1991.
The comment at the end about football looking natural for women unlike other codes really show you how times have changed.
So long ago they were still just the “Female Socceroos”! Great find!
Indeed, the Matildas name didn’t come in until 1995; a name brought in as part of a naming competition through SBS, presumably in the lead-in to the WWC that year - and even then that didn’t stick with the team itself for a while.
(Wiki sourced the latter claim from a SMH article in the week leading up to the 2000 Olympics. Unknown enough that they were in “nude calendar” mode that year to raise attention and funds. How times have changed.)
Would anyone happen to know if 10 did in fact broadcast the final of the 2014/15 Australian Women’s Twenty20 Cup? And if any vision exists?
