Seven West Media announces the launch of new Northern Suburbs Weekly

Seven West Media has announced the launch of a new local newspaper, the Northern Suburbs Weekly, and the expansion of its leading community title, the Western Suburbs Weekly.

Recognising the demand for local news in the growth corridor suburbs of the north, the expanded Northern Suburbs Weekly will be widely distributed in Joondalup, stretching from Sorrento and Greenwood up to Two Rocks and inland throughout Wanneroo.

The exciting new venture comes on the heels of the successful re-launch of The Western Suburbs Weekly, which will also grow its footprint into the City of Stirling.

The Western Suburbs Weekly will expand into Scarborough and North Beach all the way up the coast to Waterman’s Bay, as well as out to Karrinyup, Innaloo and Osborne Park.

For the first time, the masthead will also be distributed in the CBD.

As we extend the reach of our two new bumper titles into more suburbs, several smaller newspapers distributed under the PerthNow brand will either be incorporated into the two new mastheads, or placed on hold for the time being.

Seven West Media CEO, Maryna Fewster, said: “Local communities want trusted news and information that reflects the places where they live, work and raise their families. These changes allow us to put greater focus and investment behind two strong weekly mastheads and deepen our connection to the communities they serve.”

Seven West Media Editor-in-Chief, Christopher Dore, said: “Local journalism and storytelling is at the heart of what we do. This next stage of our local publishing strategy will broaden our coverage across the North and West, and double down on our commitment to serving local people and local businesses.”

The two mastheads will be supported by a 12-month marketing and promotions program, including community partnerships, local activations and cross-channel promotion, designed to build awareness, grow readership and create new opportunities for advertisers to connect with local audiences.

The Northern Suburbs Weekly and expanded Western Suburbs Weekly will launch on 10 September 2026, marking the next chapter in Seven West Media’s commitment to local publishing across Western Australia.

A rare collaboration between Nine and Seven. I wonder what Seven will gain from this joint venture.

The ABC understands former senior Google and Twitter executive Karen Stocks is also in line to be appointed, subject to background checks on both candidates, which are being conducted by board search firm Hattonneale.

If successful both would still face election at the upcoming annual general meeting of Southern Cross, likely to be held in November.

The ABC has attacked The West Australian’s grand final week coverage for being “over the top”, bizarrely questioning the paper’s reasons for being all-in on the news of Fremantle Dockers’ quest for a maiden premiership.

The coverage has caught the eye of the national broadcaster’s media analysis program Media Watch, which this week sent a series of questions about the paper’s motives to Editor-in-Chief Christopher Dore.

“We have noted the blanket coverage leading up to Saturday’s match. Do you think the coverage was a little over the top? If not, why not?” Mario Christodoulou, executive producer from Media Watch, asked.

Christodoulou said the Media Watch segment would be “part critique, part celebration” of The West’s “legitimate but sometimes oddball” stories in the lead up to the Grand Final.

Ummmm…if you think that’s over the top, wait 'til you see whatever Newcastle media does whenever the Knights do well. If they make the grand final, oh boy, it’ll make The West Australian seem fair and balanced.

I can say this as a Knights lifer and having been in the Valley for 1997 and 2001.

Plus, a rich for the ABC to go after the West Australian…1233 went all in those years too.

A post was merged into an existing topic: Southern Cross Austereo (Regional)

I have just completed a story about the name change proposal. This is not an exclusive - there is just an ASX story about Annual General Meeting on 5 November and this is just one of the agenda items. This is the parent company name change of Southern Cross Media Group. It does not mention anything about SCA which is a subsidiary of SCM. I would speculate that SCA would be retired because it is not used for almost anything except some corporate footers.

Seems to make sense with the new name.

Very forward thinking to name the new business after the division that is haemorrhaging money.

Isn’t SCA still used as the umbrella brand for the radio division?

To the user above - it was not about selecting the name of the division that is losing revenue. It was about selecting the brand that is the most familiar with advertisers and the public. Almost anyone and everyone can identify what the red 7 is. Southern Cross is unknown to most of the general public - radio stations are called Hit or Triple M or their own name - Southern Cross is not a familiar business name.

To the other question about SCA and radio. Correct. Southern Cross Media is made up of two main businesses - Seven and Southern Cross Austereo. The new parent company would be Seven Media Group and under that still have Seven and SCA. However, what is to be determined is whether Seven actually effectively stop using it altogether.

I think that is likely because SCA is really not used anywhere. There are some business disclaimers with the name such as competition terms and conditions or a footer says copyright 2026 SCA or some other small business detail. There has been and effectively no use for the name outside legalities.

A shame given the heritage of both SC and Austereo names.
