Sky News (2016-Feb 2025)

Sky News ran a piece, approx 9.30 on the Golden Globes using unwatermarked footage & was done by a Nine News reporter as far as I know.

Do they still have agreements with Nine and/or Seven for use of their footage, reports, etc?

Seven also used unwatermarked footage from the Golden Globes on its report at the 6pm bulletin.

Maybe the organisers provided the world feed?

Seven ended their supply agreement some years ago now. Sky regularly runs Nine packages and footage though.

Any idea what’s going to happen to Sky’s name and branding? Isn’t their deal with Sky UK up?

Hmm not sure but I can think of a few names there could replace it. None of them I can repeat here as it may upset the two sky news fans we have here

Probably News TV and they just use the News.com.au logo. Would be a breach of the Trade Practices Act because what they’ve got it now doesn’t quite cut the mustard for “news”.

Can’t call it Fox News or Foxtel News.

They really should just lean into it at this stage.

Australian News Channel Pty Ltd are attempting to register the following trademarks:

AUSTRALIAN NEWS CHANNEL Filed 07/11/24

AUSTRALIA’S ELECTION CHANNEL Filed 10/11/24

AUSTRALIAN AGENDA Filed 12/11/24

AGENDA Filed 12/11/24

AUSTRALIA CHANNEL Filed 10/12/24

should be noted they already own Agenda and Australian Agenda and are trying to broaden the use of the trademark

they have previously tried to trademark Australian News Channel in 2023, Australia’s Election Channel in 2024, Australian Agenda in 2023, Agenda in 2023, & Australia Channel in 2023.

these attempts lapsed. they could be for a variety of reasons: Namely, they may have failed to respond to an adverse report or pay the appropriate fees on time.

its safe to assume they are at least looking at renaming to Australian News Channel if they have paid a lawyer to file the trademark

Isn’t ANC the legal name anyway

Just to clarify, is Sky News still owned by Newscorp or was it part of the assets sold to DAZN?

it is, but they are not seeking trademark for the legal name. its Class 9, Class 16, Class 38 and Class 41.

class 9 is (…) publications in electronic form; data, music and other material supplied on line or from facilities provided on the Internet …

class 16 is Printed matter including books, magazines, publications, newsletters, journals, catalogues, stationery, photographs, pictures and calendars

Class 38 is Broadcasting; transmission of information; television broadcasting; cable television broadcasting; subscription television broadcasting; …

and class 41 is

Entertainment services; entertainment services including news, current affairs and entertainment provided via television, film, the Internet, the world wide web, telephone, radio, video recordings, digital recordings, satellite, cable, sound recording and any other electronic means including a global computer network,…

still owned by news

Right so readying options for when they rebrand.

Australian News Channel linking up with News website and Australian newspaper branding is an option

Or branding Fox News Australia and using the resources available from that.

Some good sleuthing there @Tejas57 !

Aus News replacing Sky News maybe?

Fox news austalia is possible but at this point in time there is no applications to protect the name. There were some but they lapsed and have not been revived.

Thats the result of a slow day at work when you work at a massive law firm

I’d like to see Fox News brand.

But feels like that might not be happening.

There is defi equity in the Sky brand in Australia

So maybe they don’t change it al all

They dont own the brand. They licence it from comcast and the ageement is ending soon (some souces say thsi year)

There is alot of unhappiness in comcast as to how sky news Australia are trashing the brand ans there is a good chance the agreement will not be extended

Is there? I’d hope there is, but maybe Comcast won’t give a shit and are happy to take Rupe’s money.

As another (now deceased) media mogul once said, There is a little bit of the whore in all of us.
