Queensland is a very Seven region as well (though not a stronghold like Adelaide and Perth), especially with 6pm news with legendary newsreaders Rod and Kay over the years and its impenetrable regional affiliate 7QLD spearheaded by Seven Local News with Rob Brough.
This could very well alienate and turn viewers away, maybe good news for Nine and 10 Brisbane’s local shows?
Agreed. It’s to my understanding that James Warburton is one of the people who helped screw up Ten before CBS became their knight in shining armour, so why should anyone be surprised that he’s doing similar things at Seven?
I could imagine Hugh Marks being pretty happy with the current corporate situation at Seven West Media though!
I’d probably say the local Afternoon News bulletins - seems easy enough to do a national version over the Summer break and not return them in Late January/Early February, citing the need to put additional resources into the 6pm bulletins as a reason why.
After that, maybe Seven Gold Coast News or perhaps even the annual telethons in Melbourne & Perth.
While Nine seem to be doing OK compared to Seven, they’ve made cutbacks too. Just ask viewers in Darwin, Mackay or the Darling Downs about the quality of the local news service they get from Nine these days!
…and because Seven also need additional bandwidth if there’s to be enough room on the multiplex for 7mateHD while still retaining the HD simulcast of the main channel and all the others.
With that taken into consideration, the closure of Your Money (even if that tie-up between Nine and News Corp wasn’t ever going to last long, post-Fairfax merger) must’ve been a major blessing in disguise for Nine when they wanted/needed space for 9GemHD.
They have any* outside of the 5pm news?
*The kids shows don’t count IMO because…
A: They’re on 10 Peach.
B: They’re screened nationally.
This will definitely not happen in Perth, not after 51 years of history and good it has done for Western Australia, and it has become a institution for the State. They would be absolutely crazy to.
Providing local regional content in enshrined in legislation; so about the worst that could happen is for regional news to be produced at the closest metro station as Southern Cross has done with Nine, but there will always be local news.
Probably ROI - return on investment. They may rate well, but relative to the costs and the return (and being local only so limited audience) the return on investment may have been small
If Seven even think about touching the Perth Telethon they would be blasted from every direction. Especially if some moron from the east was responsible for it.
A lot of us say TVW is untouchable but messing with Telethon would be the beginning of the end. It would be commercial suicide.
Telethon is a small price to pay for the ratings return they get from viewers for the rest of the year.
Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’d lose any remaining respect (which really isn’t that much) I have for Seven if they were to do anything to the local telethons in Melbourne and especially Perth!
But given the amount of local content on Seven that has faced/is facing the axe, I’d be surprised if someone wasn’t at least considering doing something like reducing the telecast (which I believe they’ve already done with the Melbourne GFA) or turning the telethons into a national thing to save money.
