SC7 Spencer Gulf, updates for 7 Central and 7 Darwin, and now all the 10 updates.
Hobart always had a news gathering base for 7 Tasmania and had a basic studio setup (camera and green screen) where they presented sport via live cross and on occasion the whole bulletin if Jo was in Hobart for whatever reason. When they relocated and upgraded the Launceston studio and set, Hobart also got a tech upgrade and an identical set.
It’s a shame they don’t show any of the set in the Spencer Gulf bulletin or in the Tasmania bulletin when it comes from Hobart. It’s there, they should really use it.
It’s a shame they haven’t done anything really to improve the bulletin or align it closer to the Tassie one. Why wouldn’t they just use the same supers, full screens, weather, etc as Tassie? It’s like they’re purposefully making it look cheap.
Here’s one of today’s Canberra updates. Apologies for the glitch in the middle, that was my recording. It didn’t air like that.
Quite a few errors in the scripts that need fixing, but understandable with the short turn around time they must have between filming each of these updates.
Unsure what was meant by “QR codes are being implemented by citizens and are encouraged to start using the app from today”.
The presenter really struggled to get to the end of that update, stumbling over many words. As others have said, these updates are far too long.
What time do these updates air?
This one that I recorded aired around 3:20pm
“CRB app”, only lasted five seconds. Starting from a very low base.
Given the length, they really would be better inserting a longer piece as a bloc in the 5pm news somewhere (maybe even replacing the metro weather, just before The Project) rather than these ‘updates’ appearing at random times in the afternoon.
Yes, I noticed that too. Not a good start on that update. Should be “Check in CBR app”.
If they had the time, it would probably have been worth re-filming that update, but the poor journos at SCA probably don’t have any time to re-do it if they make a mistake.
Another problem is info easily gets lost because of the length, pacing and lack of genuine pauses, but should improve in time. If you’re not paying attention to the screen and what they are trying to say, good luck!
Couldn’t pronounce Canberrans either.
Anyone of the talented mockers here able to show how just adding some stock footage to accompany the stories and keeping the music running throughout would make these updates look so much more professional?

What I mean is that I’m a journalist with over 11 years experience and I looked at applying earlier this year after SCA contacted me. I didn’t care that they were perceived as “entry level”
Yes, they are too “wordy” and the presenter has to speak fast to fit everything in - which is possibly one of the reasons she stumbles over words. The script needs to be shorter. Delivery itself will improve with time I’m sure.
Don’t worry DJ. Experienced Journalists weren’t wanted. Had a friend who was approached through the initial email with about 15 years of news experience and had produced News Updates for Prime7 and he wasn’t even considered even though he just wanted a tree change.
Just further to what @Nick said, it’s also quite a legacy thing. 7 Tas, formerly Southern Cross, formerly TNT9 has all their history in Launceston and in the Launceston studios and all the tech and most of the presenters have been from there. It’s only been in recent years that Hobart has been able to have more. I think it also coincided a lot with when the Hobart SCA operations moving to Campbell Street in Hobart (they were previously in Argyle Street since the beginning of aggregation I believe) where they look to have done huge upgrades.
Now, the news can come from multiple locations in the state each night with nobody noticing - I think often the news can be from Launceston, sport from Hobart and weather from Launceston but on weekends it is news and sport from Hobart, weather from Launceston.
I agree, it seems like overkill but we’re the only state with a capital that isn’t serviced by a metro station and ordinarily in that scenario you’d expect Hobart to be the base but with all the experience and the history and the base of the presenters Launceston is still known as the main base for 7 Tas.
The traditional north south split of the state also plays a part - Tasmania is very decentralised, there’s about 50% of the state living in the south of the state and 50% in the north.
Well if it had been a job for you then I am sure it woulda been a good foot in the door into TV for you, that’s the point I am making, it’s not job for experienced TV journalists it’s a starting point, and has proven to be a good one, despite the quality of the product.
It’s not like many of those Presenters are that fresh out of their studies as was suggested in here, I am also impressed SCA mostly chose presenters from the markets they’re reading updates for or from mainland Aus and they relocated to Tasmania.
