I wouldn’t be surprised if they amalgamated everything into one metro and one regional market for each state.

I don’t really see any need for the Government to get involved. The broadcasters are well on track to effectively getting the same outcome anyway and Government involved is more likely to fuck things up.

why were the SA stations allowed (or forced?) to retain their solus markets instead of doing what every other state did?

Similar situation to Griffith and the two-broadcaster markets. The government didn’t believe that the area could sustain more broadcasters.

Although today it would make more sense to amalgamate the four SA markets (yes, it’s technically four) into a statewide broadcast area, possibly with the local sub-areas retained.

Ok, so it’s treated like 2 Griffiths in one state? Makes sense. But you’d think a 2 station market would be the default in a situation like this. Spencer’s population is 140k, Riverland 41k, Mt Gambier 30k, Broken Hill 18k. We’re looking at ~230,000 people across both licence areas. Why that didn’t turn into a typical 2 station market is still a mystery to me. Griffith in contrast has under 30k people.

Prime’s multi’s are dirty feeds, so whatever Seven does to their multi’s is mirrored on Prime.

I can’t see why Imparja would want to take on a solus market, which requires a lot more work, when they’re just barely running on fumes for the one station (& a half if you consider CDT) they already own.

In hindsight it’s quite remarkable that Griffith and Mildura were left out of aggregation. I get the argument used at the time that the areas weren’t big enough to sustain multiple broadcasters, but that was also half the point of aggregation - even if they needed to put a special cut out in the legislation to reduce local content requirements of whatever to make them viable.

There was a huge infrastructure cost associated with aggregation. The government at the time had to step in to cover the cost of new transmitters to make the whole thing work.

Given the cost of aggregation for Griffith would only benefit the few who didn’t have huge aerials to receive TV from Wagga, it was possibly deemed ‘unviable’.

I very much doubt that will work. And where will that leave Griffith? Would Griffith be included in the expansion of the Riverina NSW market?
