As he prepares to turn 60, veteran news anchor Mark Ferguson admits one word is beginning to creep into focus: retirement.
The longtime face of Seven News Sydney has helmed the bulletin since 2009, becoming a trusted presence in loungerooms across New South Wales.
But with the “big 6-0” taking place today, Ferguson says the milestone feels different.
“I’m clinging on to the last days of my 50s as we speak,” Ferguson told Sunday Confidential. “It’s very strange. I have to say I’m finding it a bit tougher than turning 50. I thought 50 was a big one. But the big 6-0 seems to be a little bit more serious.
“I don’t want to say I’m running out of time, but you start to think you are running out of a little bit of time to do all the things that you always planned to do.”
Travel tops that list.
“There’s a few mountains I’d like to walk up, a few seas I would like to swim in and a few islands I would love to visit.”
Seven picked him up in late 2009 after he was axed from Nine in a coup with Peter Overton taking over.
From memory Ferguson presented Seven 4.30 News on Fridays, occasionally, replacing Chris Bath (who’d usually do them covering for Samantha Armytage as it was a day off due to also co-hosting WS).
He’d replace Bath in 2010 as weekend Sydney presenter, as she replaced the retired Ian Ross on weeknights.
