According to The Australianâs Media Diary, Anthony De Ceglie had planned to sack just about every Seven personality on more than $300k in a bid to save costs.
Targets of the purge included Liam Bartlett from Spotlight, Michael Usher and Chris Reason of the Sydney newsroom, and the long-running duo Rick and Sue in Perth. Only talent belonging to Sunrise and The Morning Show would be spared.
However with De Ceglie gone, the purge will obviously not be going ahead

Even if Rick and Sue had been sacked, Perth viewers wouldâve still stuck to Seven News, as they have been for more than three decades.
This is despite Nine News continuing to improve in that market, recording the occasional nightly win every now and thenâŚ

Highly doubt that. If they were sacked and pulled off air, Perth would have a meltdown. Easy win for nine in that city.

I reckon what has helped Nine News in the west is the stability. Michael Thomson has been in his role since January 2018, though I think it was only last year that they started to narrow the gap between themselves and Seven.
I also think when Rick and Sue retires, Seven could poach Tracy Vo from STW and pair her with (say) Tim McMillan on the weeknight news (with Angela Tsun remaining on weekends) to take them into the new era.
