I’m surprised Brisbane have forgone Tony Auden from their latest round of marketing. They spent so much time building him up. Same with Melbourne - I would think Jane Bunn is a big drawcard.

Have seen a big weather promo for Jane Bunn running the past couple of weeks.

They’ve been really focusing on Shane Webcke now that Wally ‘stepped down’ from the presenting role on Nine. However, excluding Tony Auden from the group shot did seem odd to me too. Maybe they should include Paul Burt too if they think ‘weather on location’ is more appealing.

Nice shot. Fergo looks better without a tie.

‘Max, Sharyn & Shane’ sounds like a breakfast radio trio but ok.

Breaking News at 5.30pm for Gold Coast then for a different story at 6pm for the Brisbane bulletin.

Gold Coast

Brisbane

Seven with an exclusive claim for the vision of the scene. However, while Nine had no vision, it did cover the story and there was vision from the scene shown on ABC News, so another dubious claim that does match their promo’s claim about an exclusive.

Channel Seven Melbourne breaches captioning rules

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found Channel Seven Melbourne Pty Ltd in breach of the captioning rules for a broadcast of 7NEWS Breaking News in June 2021.

An ACMA investigation found captions for the broadcast, which involved a Victorian Government press conference relating to COVID-19 and wild weather events in Victoria, had accuracy and comprehensibility issues which did not meet requirements under the Broadcasting Services Television Captioning Standard 2013.

Under the rules, captions provided for television programs, including for news and current affairs, must be readable, accurate and comprehensible so that they can be meaningful to deaf and hearing-impaired viewers.

Examples of captioning issues identified in the investigation included misspelt suburb names, and omitted words and captions. The cumulative effect of the issues resulted in the captioning service not meeting the quality requirements.

As a result of the breach findings, the ACMA accepted a court-enforceable undertaking offered by Channel Seven Melbourne to commence independent audits of captioning quality and processes. This includes additional training for staff responsible for monitoring captions provided for live and near-live content.

The ACMA administers and enforces the captioning rules through annual compliance reporting and the investigation of complaints concerning the captioning of television programming. Improving the quality of captioning is one of the ACMA’s compliance priorities for 2022–23.

While I get your point, sometimes footage and not the whole story is exclusive.

From the screenshots, it looks like ABC were there much later, which would make 7’s daytime footage exclusive.

Seems strange to me that Seven would set out to run a promo campaign based around EXCLUSIVE and to set up a definition to test the claim against specifically that the story is only broadcast by one source. (no-one forced them to come up with the definition).

Last night’s EXCLUSIVE (and others before) didn’t measure up to that definition even closely. The story that Seven claimed as an exclusive was broadcast on 2 other news bulletins including simultaneously on Nine as the opening story of both bulletins. While Nine didn’t have vision ABC News did. About the only claim that could have been made was “First on Scene” with some of Seven’s vision earlier than ABC’s. This claim is commonly seen on the 2 Gold Coast bulletins in bugs.

Sunday’s 5pm bulletin again presented by Katrina Blowers and again the intro voiceover says very abruptly, “This is 7 News.” No, “with Katrina Blowers”.

The Saturday 5pm News was in Sydney yesterday, is that normal?

This isn’t uncommon when the presenter isn’t the regular/main one, however if Katrina is regularly presenting she should have her own VO. In Adelaide they don’t have VO’s for the fill-in’s given they let almost anyone present that bulletin when they need to.

Pretty sure last weekend was with Katrina from Brisbane as well. I would’ve thought they’d have it on file or record one. And she is the regular Brisbane weekend newsreader.

So she should have one then, sorry I wasn’t aware of who she was.

Since Angie Asimus has been on maternity leave, the 5pm News has been presented interstate on Sundays. From what I’ve seen, it’s usually from Brisbane. They still do sport from ATN, though, and every time I wonder why it wouldn’t be easier to just use someone from Sydney to front the bulletin.

Robert Ovadia has done some Sundays. Would really just depend on whether anyone from Sydney is available to read it.

They make many dubious exclusive claims, but being the only ones to have the pictures at time of broadcast stands as exclusive.
