Seven News Content and Appearance

Does the general public really compare sets in different states and then judge them as more polished? I doubt it.

No it’s more the overall look and branding across the network. You see how well nine does it with national/local bulletins coming out of varies cities.

While the idea of a standard look for Seven News sets around the country is all well and good, I personally think a far more pressing issue (particularly in Sydney & Melbourne, but it wouldn’t hurt to bring the services in all cities under review) for their bulletins is the content, what stories are selected and how they’re reported on, etc.

By this point in time I’ve lost count at how many times we’ve criticised Seven News over the past decade or so for having lead stories (or at the very least, stories which make it into the first block) that really should be left for the end of the bulletin if they even make it to air at all. And very lightweight “Special Reports” compared to the meaningful ones we saw on Seven News Sydney back in the mid-2000s…or even on current day Nine News Sydney to a certain extent.

I seldom watch Seven News but I watched both 6pm news bulletins tonight and thought Seven had the better story selection. They had a couple of good crime exclusives and some other stories I’m surprised Nine didn’t cover. Thought their subscription streaming consumer piece was a waste of time, however. The presenters are competent and I’d rate Mark as a smoother reader than Overton but the dynamic between the team is dull and dry. Much prefer the dynamic between the Nine team even though I don’t particularly like Amber.

So because they’re winning in ratings they should take the lazy option all the time? Just air 3 hour old news from Sydney or Melbourne and be done with it? Never do anything different?

Studio 10 had a promo quite a number of years back which said “the west deserves better” and that was spot on.

If it wasn’t for Perth then Seven would have been up shit creek nationally for years. You keep that going by treating the west better, not subjecting them to outdated and irrelevant Sydney/Melbourne-centric crap every day.

Local morning news for WA should be permanent. WA is and always has been a completely different market with a large time difference.

Your comment about more hours is rubbish - the staff are already there. Use them.

I actually agree with you, if I had my way all markets would have their own local morning news bulletin. Look at Melbourne, a city of 5.5 million and it still gets its news pipelined down from Sydney. I’m just well aware that the network is going through (a difficult time financially), and the money just isn’t there to implement or justify local morning editions.

With Perth getting what seems to be a permanent local morning bulletin, I reckon Adelaide should follow suit. They should try having Seven’s morning schedule move forward by half an hour and insert a local bulletin at 11.30 before returning to normal. Have whoever’s presenting the afternoon news do the morning news too.

I reckon Adelaide needs it too with Nine crawling closer to them each day and they need to have a promotional point of difference to lure those viewers who have switched to Nine back to Seven.

‘Whilst they show Sydney news, Seven News Adelaide is the only local news service here dedicated to Adelaide in the morning, afternoon and night.’

It’s how they’ve rolled for some years now

given Australia’s two most populous states only have the capitals listed I don’t think it’s comprehensive for the majority of the nation at all. They’re just filling up a map for the sake of it.

You’re right on that. Giles in WA has a population of 3 yet is probably only on the map to make it look less empty.

I would much rather them remove the satellite/ synoptic chart for time wise in favour of a fly by in each state like is done on Sunrise.

Perth morning news is using the live city shot as the background!

could we get it for the 4pm news today?

The downside is that it’s one shot, locked-in-stock, but I suspect that won’t be a problem for a fairly tight bulletin in any case.

If this were to happen, it would need to be more flexible for wide shots and in-studio interviews. It’s been done before (below example from Global Calgary in Canada where the full, locked shot on the weather presenter just has the full output from the weather software) whether it can be done correctly here is another question.

Swap out the global logo and that set could easily fit in with 7NEWS. Good take on the angle branding

4pm Melbourne - incl countdown clock.

I just feel that the countdown clock is completely unwarranted… yet the FTV news channels (especially Seven) continue to do this

Why is a countdown clock unwarranted? It’s a visual representation of what’s happening. And remember a lot of people watch 4pm news with the sound off.

Surprised they didn’t present from Spring St. They were OB happy earlier on in the week.
