Cyclone Tracy 50 Years On
7NEWS special event on the devastation that forever changed Darwin
“It was really terrifying.”
“It brings me to tears…it still does.”
“Darwin is virtually rubble.”
These are the words of survivors of the Christmas cyclone that devastated Darwin in 1974. Now, five decades later, 7NEWS is marking this pivotal anniversary with a special event titled Cyclone Tracy 50 Years On.
Airing 7.00pm on Tuesday, 24 December on Channel 7 and 7plus, this exclusive special revisits the catastrophic day, featuring rarely seen footage from the cyclone’s aftermath and interviews with survivors, many of whom are sharing their stories for the first time.
7NEWS reporter Nick McCallum travels to Darwin, capturing the powerful firsthand accounts of residents who lived through the cyclone, offering a poignant look at the lasting impact of one of Australia’s most devastating natural disasters.
Join us as we remember the day that changed Darwin forever and hear from those who endured its horrors.
Cyclone Tracy 50 Years On: A 7NEWS Special
7.00pm Christmas Eve on Channel 7 and 7plus
Minor blooper on the morning news - for one story the Sunrise supers popped up briefly, before vanishing along with the 7News bug - was fixed in time for the next story.
I notice that Seven, that usually goes to great lengths (even in adverts) to avoid showing the competition on any of the screens of Seven, will do so for a “good cause”.
I think all the networks, despite being a bit prissy with “firsts/exclusives” in the local newsrooms, are beyond pretending their competition doesn’t exist.
They’re all in the same basket of obsolescence these days so it doesn’t really matter.
Even on Today, the first thing said on Sam Armytage’s first day filling in, was “Do you know what channel you’re on?”
It’s nice to see a bit more of this down under, the US networks all seem to be happy to promote other networks shows on late night programs etc
More than that, they often even rely on each other. Seven and Nine particularly share resources including choppers, stringers and camos.
Yet the Hubbl advert that runs on Seven omits other FTA networks whereas all networks are shown in the same advert on other channels.
7, this is a horrible Christmas gift. Respectfully.
I saw that.
It was dreadful last night. Not funny at all.
Ditch it, ditch the horoscopes, ditch the dull “unstoppable” promos. 2025 needs a refresh and back to focusing on real reporting. 7news needs to try and regain ground (and viewers) they lost in 2024.
I wasn’t even aware of the existence of the 6:57 news because I only watch the news up to 6:30. Guess I got lucky…
The website and social content has gotten worse too. Becoming very Pedestrian crossed with Daily Mail. Woeful.
Despite the local morning and afternoon bulletins being off air over summer, the local 5pm news in Adelaide is still on air this weekend.
Obviously it hasn’t been on air for the past two weekends due to cricket being scheduled ![]()
Still doing sketches with a show that ended 10 years ago. Christ this thing is a stinker. ABC really needs some fresh blood in comedy.
Can’t wait for 7 to start reporting on itself and take quotes from this thread as per the Daily Mail! ![]()
