Seven News Content and Appearance (2020-Feb 2025)

No.

It was all shot a couple of weeks ago. Here’s the 60 sec version.

Don’t get me wrong, these promos (Seven and Nine) are beautifully shot and presented but they show nothing of substance regarding actual news credibility.

“Nobody knows news like 7” says who? 7? How do you know the news?

None of these promos are showcasing the actual news gathering teams (reporters) and examples of exclusives and reporting accuracy or why we should be tuning into them over the competition.

I understand they need to have Mitch, Tom and Alicia as the focus because they’re the “faces” but nothing here tells me why I should be watching them

How dare they talk themselves up in their own promos.

Not a bad promo. The 40 second version is better in the use of the theme. The 60 takes too long to warm up. It gives me too much of a “Adelaide old city promo vibe” so 40 is punchier.

Overall it’s good. I just tire of the same slogans. “Nobody knows Melbourne better” it’s debatable. Jane has only lived here for 10 years verses Livinia who has been at-least on weather for 20 years and lived here prior…

I know why they are done but they are baseless and it’s fluff. I would have loved a new inventive slogan.

I’m not saying “your news” is much better but it’s something different. The nobody knows has a history of atleast 30 years.

Even - 7News - the one to watch. would be more modern although a short lived network tagline.

Would love to see / hear the full version of the theme, could make a good replacement of the actual news theme currently. It’s aged and I’m over the clanging bells.

You know what I’m saying. They need to prove it. Show us how. What makes it that you know the news? By having your presenters walk around Melbourne? That’s literally all they’re doing in this promo.

It depends what each promo is trying to say. This one is about showcasing Melbourne and the presenters being part of the community.

Other promos can talk to the other factors you mention, but the brief for this was minimal vo and a feeling of bigness.

Also, the tagline is an evolution of ‘Nobody knows news like Seven’. It’s now ‘Nobody knows news better’.

And promos make statements. There’s nothing wrong with Nine saying ‘Your News’ (even though it might not actually be your News) or seven using this line. They are a promise of what the station wants to be.

See it First was a mission statement, despite the fact Nine might not have always been first (but the statement came from the fact I kept noticing a pattern where Nine was first at the time).

I agree. The walking around the city has been quite the focus for 7 for the last decade. I know 9News did it too. It’s not really inventive and just shows them out and about, but yes it’s not real. But then again the mid 2000 and 2010s had a focus on why to watch with the team shots etc maybe it’s time they go back to then and when they were winning by a margin?

I’m absolutely not laying the blame on you whatsoever. You were given the brief and produced what you were asked.

I’m confused why Seven, when being smashed suddenly by the new competition, would commission a promo that’s identical to Nine’s. Odd move.

All good, not worried about blame.

Tbh I love this promo. I love the cut and I’m really happy with the way it slowly builds, revealing Mitch as the theme comes in.

For the viewer, I think they would get a sense of genuine connections between the hosts and community. The shots were shot on the run, the moments are real.

And unlike any other promo I’ve made, I’ve hung on shots longer than ever before. The Tim Watson shot is a very genuine moment that grows and grows.

It might be similar to other promos - I’ll let you guys judge that, but I think it will stand out on air when it comes on (very different watching a clip on social media).

When it comes on I don’t think viewers will immediately know it’s a news promo and might be drawn in by the pace.

More to come.

I gather this will be done in all states?

I agree that the shots of the team connecting with the community are good, however, it wouldn’t hurt to have some shots of reporters in the field etc. Also would be nice to include the weekend team.

Despite this, the music and the overall tagline work’s well, great job as always @blackbox

What’s wrong with Adelaide?

Currently only Melbourne as there has been a big sudden swing in that market towards Nine.

But I’m sure this could be implemented around the country if need be.

I presume if this is going to be a network promo push they would include some shots of Sunrise in Melbourne, etc.

Yeah I think the point of the promo has been misunderstood, they absolutely can, have and will run those types of promos where they drive home the news gathering, reporters, busy newsrooms, tragic events, being first etc..

But, to me, this is more about the localism, connection, and almost subconsciously connecting with the presenters without the doom & gloom news nature of a lot of news promos.

It’s warm, inviting, and visually looks great. If I lived in Melbourne, I’d be proud to live there based on seeing that.

Nice job @blackbox

Nothing wrong with Adelaide, but the vibe the promo gives isn’t one of a busy bustling city which Adelaide in comparison is a smaller market and has a more town feel to it.

I really like it, especially the use of the actual theme song made to order. I hate commercial music in news promos. Would love to hear more cuts like that on the main news, it’s such an elegant theme song that’s not used to potential.

Does this mean there will be more versions?

I would love to see a version, that also includes elements of last year’s promo which included lots of behind the scenes.

I think last years promo really shows the size of seven news, eg, Chris Reason interview Ukraine’s Leader.

Maybe that’s what helped with last years ratings.

Nonetheless great work @blackbox

Nice music in that promo but generic otherwise, almost clichéd.
Really wish they’d bring back ‘Nobody knows (your city) like Seven’.
Here is Adelaide we had a really catchy song for that.

Sorry but just feels generic and like every other promo I’ve seen of Peter Mitchell walking around Melbourne laughing and smiling.

Love the remixed theme. Not too sure about some of the footage though. Too much of the back of Mitch’s head and stayed too long on that shot of Grandpa Watson.
