Seven Network - Programs and Schedules

A shame they didn’t keep Katie Hopkins around for this. Would have fitted right in.

Another Ch 9 show being revived on 7.

It’s hardly being revived, it’s a retrospective special which they’ve probably picked up quite cheap.

Not really. Just a special.

The gall of Ten to declare itself undisputed in under-50s when Seven is home to such youthful, exuberant, cutting-edge talent like Darryl Somers.

Let’s hope this is a major ratings flop, because unlike Daryl (most of) the rest of us don’t want Hey Hey 3.0 as a regular series on Seven in 2022!

I could actually see Seven wanting to launch a revived series if the reunion special rates well.

Would it really be a bad thing though? As long as it didn’t resort to using insensitive and racist material, I don’t see what the issue would be. At least it would mean more variety on FTA.

I don’t know if it can even be done. I used to watch Rove, The Panel and Letterman regularly, but the millennials seem to have changed the world too much to make it happen. There’s no real money for it because it all gets funnelled into the reality formats and no point when it is very difficult to try things without getting your head bitten off.

It’ll capture some eye balls as a one off special. The problem is, anyone under the age of 30 wouldn’t even know what this show is.

Not to mention that the last time a variety show was tried on Australian TV (Saturday Night Rove almost two years ago), the ratings were so poor that they essentially killed the genre.

Would it be good if there was a regular variety show on Australian TV where musicians/comedians could cut their teeth before hopefully moving onto bigger and better things? Absolutely. Is such a program viable in the current TV landscape? Probably not.

There’s no real incentive to watch free-to-air if you’re not into reality-TV or sport. I think that’s part of the problem. The networks are so invested into reality-TV that they’re pushing away anyone who isn’t into those formats. Streaming apps are as successful as they are because they offer a greater range of content, whether it be dramas, thrillers, documentaries etc…

I know the FTA networks are limited by costs of course, but you need to give people a reason to watch your content. If, for instance, there was a Nine/Stan music panel show which had guests like Amy Shark, Olivia Rodrigo etc.; people who are commercially relevant rather than some B-grade musician from 20+ years ago, it will grab people’s attention.

People make the argument that variety-TV shouldn’t come back because of what happened with “Saturday Night Rove”, but people forget that the overall product was cheap and suffered from a lack of promotion. Those were the two biggest factors which went against it.

Would explain why 7 wasn’t interested in the 50 Years of Young Talent Time special being pitched around.

Variety can’t work in Australia in part because of the immaturity of our networks, in that won’t let guests from other networks on to plug / promote their show, meaning that the number of guests is always going to be limited.

Not to mention the networks generally won’t let variety get off the ground whatsoever without advertorials and/or heavily sponsored segments.

Sheesh. It’s just a once-off-special peeps. How is that throwing Daryl down our throats like Sonia Krugar (and Shane Jacobson in previous years) who have appeared on every single show on Seven in recent years. Daryl hosted a short-run version of DWTS after being off for so long. Now, with one Hey Hey special.

IF it rates on the pass mark, then i can see Seven trying a variety-type show next year. But not with Daryl, but with some of Seven’s actual favourites… of Hamish McLachlan, after his brilliance appearance of the Olympics, with Sonia as co-host, with high-profile regulars like Todd McKenny, Shane Jacobson and the “Sunrise Family”. Enjoy.

That’s how it started last time and they ended up doing a revival series. You have to nip it in the bud. :stuck_out_tongue:

Port Adelaide v Carlton will be shown on 3 hour delay into South Australia. The match starts at 4.05pm local time. IIRC this is the first twilight match of the season to be aired on delay in SA or WA.

Without some games being on a forced delay on FTA, there would be little to no incentive for fans in SA/WA to subscribe to Foxtel or Kayo.
