Seven Network - Programs and Schedules

The Santos Tour Down Under, given it is a major South Australian event, has tended to get main channel coverage in Adelaide.

The NFL got main channel coverage last year but only Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane has been added this year.

The fact that it will fill multiple hours of a schedule which would otherwise consist of umpteenth repeats of Border Security or Air Crash Investigations and may have some chance of rating better.

I doubt it would rate better than it running on mate. US Football is niche, good for younger demos but definitely a better fit for mate while Seven normally airs lower cost mainstream programming instead.

The simple fact that it will be on the main channel exposes it to people who otherwise would probably avoid 7Mate as a channel. It will likely rate a bit better on the main channel, but the point is it will rate better than any filler programme Seven would throw up on a Sunday afternoon.

Plus, you have to remember this is the first day of the Asutralian Open as well. Putting it on the main channel presents a competitive sports alternative for those looking for something other than the tennis.

So niche that they decided they will bring a regular season game to the MCG next season. I think you are underestimating the popularity of the sport in Australia.

Wonder if Cynic would have general numbers to test that theory on the Monday and whether there is any appreciation from the usual mate numbers?

Plus if what Chewy said was right, they’d have aired it main channel all the way through (except cricket and news priorities obviously).

You could still say its niche, but like the NRL with their Vegas round or whatever its called and the State Of Origin game played in the US in 1987 (or there abouts), they are testing the waters by having a NFL game in Australia. Will it be a thing? Perhaps.

But one thing is clear, airing Border Security would gain almost as much critique as 10s daytime offerings. We do know sport will attract an audience - I know its not exactly the same thing, but look at how many years Nine had WWOS on Saturday afternoons and 7 had Sportsworld on Sunday mornings

No one sane cares outside this forum if Border Security airs here and there. It is low cost and Australian programming for Seven that can be kept in the background.

Plus the comparison between random NFL and Wide World Of Sports or another program that stopped about 20 years ago is a little odd.

Its more demonstrating Australia has always had a sporting interest. Also for probably the last 40 or so years the NFL has aired on various networks including 10, 7 and I believe ABC has also screened it at some stage. I think 7 were trying to put their best option forward. My thinking is do you screen something really good that has little to no chance of drawing viewers because its against a blockbuster event or do you use something that may pique interest of some and possibly build a following

We are talking about two very different things here though. The NFL bringing a game to Melbourne is a result of the growing popularity of the game here in Australia, driven by the rise in the number of Australian players in the league, particularly in the last decade. The NRL taking games to Vegas is an attempt to capture gambling dollars and to try and create a following where no such following currently exists.

We already have them. They did the same thing last year and the game made the Top 30, where they normally aren’t seen.

The whole season or the playoffs? Regardless, the games pretty much all take place during programs such as Sunrise and TMS, both of which rate much better with a general audience. It is one of the rare instances where a game they are showing takes place in a slot which would otherwise be taken up with filler.

No-one is saying that having Border Security as a filler programme is a bad thing. The point is that if you have something that can rate better and fills a decent chunk of the afternoon schedule, why wouldn’t you show it.

But I’d have thought it’d have the opposite effect? A major sporting event as competition vs clear air against NFL.

Even recall Cricket Australia making a thing last summer about moving Big Bash final to a different day, as they did not want it up against the Aus Open final (a wise decision given the latter did over 2m).

Again, the game last year that aired on the main channel against the AO made the top 30. Is it going to outrate the AO? Pretty likely no, but it will do much better than the filler they would otherwise be showing.

There is a huge difference between the BBL avoiding a direct schedule against the AO final and Seven wanting to show the NFL on the main channel against the opening day’s play. It’s apples and oranges.

But it will ensure the AO cannot reach the maximum potential audience.

Seven schedules horse racing events against Melbourne Cup for the same purpose.

It comes back to either showing something that might attract an audience or filler content. If you are after advertising dollars, why would you throw your hands up in the air and give up. I remember a time when 7 and 10 in Sydney and Brisbane would screen alternative viewing to their normal schedule for State Of Origin.

Also it can be compared to AFL and Rugby League on Friday nights during Winter - do 7 and 9 go head to head on main channel or not? I think 7 is going the right way by scheduling NFL on Sundays on main channel where possible. It is a much better strategy being used here aa opposed to secondary channels. If 7 hadn’t shot themselves in the foot with the Cricket Australia TV deals, I am sure if there was an international cricket match on, it would take precedence.

I have checked this out, 50,000 below program number 30 for the day.

Out of this world emergencies

9-1-1 heads to space in new season, dropping 26 January exclusive to Seven and 7plus

Explosive US drama 9-1-1 returns for an extraordinary ninth season.

After saving Los Angeles from hundreds of emergencies over the past eight seasons, the heroes of the 118 Fire Department are facing their biggest challenges yet, as some of their own are in trouble in outer space.

The double episode season premiere kicks off when Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) and Hen Wilson (Aisha Hinds) rescue eccentric billionaire tech mogul Trip Hauser (Mark Consuelos) after he is swallowed by a whale. Grateful and impulsive, Trip invites Hen to join him on a historic space flight and she takes LAPD Field Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) along for the ride.

But as Hen and Athena are launched out of this world, disaster strikes. A powerful geomagnetic storm wreaks havoc both in space and back on Earth. When trouble hits beyond the atmosphere, can they call 9-1-1 for help?

Back in Los Angeles, the 118 hit the streets to rescue the public from falling asteroids and space debris.

9-1-1 stars Angela Bassett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman and Kenneth Choi.

9-1-1

Returns Monday, 26 January. Stream from 6.00pm on 7plus or 8.30pm on Seven

Note - double episode

Ep 1: In honor of Bobby Nash’s sacrifice, the 118 comes together to dedicate the firehouse in his memory. Meanwhile, when a billionaire tech giant is involved in a life-or-death emergency, the team must race to his aid.

Ep 2: As a geostorm ravages Earth, Athena and Hen’s space mission teeters on the edge; on the ground, the 118 battles chaos when technology goes rogue.

I’m talking reach numbers, of which it was well within the top 30. You have to remember it is also a 3+ hour broadcast, so those numbers are good. What matters though is that they are better than any filler they would have shown in the same slot.

Sport more often than not on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon will beat most other offerings. I personally think 7 should be screening AFL (rights permitting) in the Saturday and Sunday afternoon slots. I know Sunday there is a potential for a clash with NRL, but of they aired a 12:30pm game on 7, it could be done and dusted before the NRLs 4pm kick off. That’s just my opinion, I am sure some will argue against it

But because of the coding system - AO has six entries, then the morning news - it actually made it onto the top 30.

So it did very, very well. And this year, with an added city (Bri) and a potentially close matchup (whatever it is), it’ll go even higher.

There’s no evidence of that because we don’t know what placed 31, 32, 33 etc.
