I think what the AFL is trialing this year is good. It’s Sunday night matches when Monday is a public holiday & also 5pm starts in Perth (though these are Fox games with local 7 coverage).
I don’t think they will do Sunday night every single round but maybe during school holidays in certain states with certain teams and like this year when there is a public holiday the next day
They did this briefly back in 2014 when they scheduled a Carlton and Collingwood game on a Sunday night which did attract a poor crowd.
However, I feel the time is right to try this idea again. Not all the games have to be in Melbourne - some could be in Perth with one of the WA sides hosting a big Victorian club, played at a friendly time to attend in Perth, but in primetime for Victoria to draw big TV audiences.
I’m sure it would work well for TV audiences in Melbourne and Adelaide (maybe) but I think the AFL would be less inclined to schedule AFL match’s on Sunday night due to low attendance numbers. Segregating the TV schedules between states on Sunday might also be a downfall for Seven.
Sunday night football will happen eventually on 7. It’s a more crowd friendly spot than thursday, and while ratings are lower than a thurs or fri night game, you have a lot of people who will eventually tune into that slot when/if it becomes a reoccurring or even a permanent fixture. As the FTA market continues to get smaller, live sport will become even more valuable and this will be the next transition of that. It doesn’t even need to beat MAFS or 60 minutes. 7 will get around a million viewers when you combine AFL and whatever gameshow they air in the northern states (unless a local team is playing) and that alone would be good for them.
I think a big part of the problem of the 10 version was the half-hour format. If they followed the original format with the right hosts, it could be good.
Sunday night is still the weekend. It faces the same issue as thursday as you have to go to work next day, but the difference is that you still have the whole day off, therefore there’s no issue in getting to and from the game.
