I’d suggest the AFL approved the time change after a request from Seven/Fox but has been slow to update its website/app.

Looks like they’re continuing with the movie(s) now starting at 8:30pm, for the first time since the 2000s when they’d on/off be around that time, airing comedy classics and UK dramas in the earlier evening.
It follows Nine’s move since COVID and Saturday ACA when Space Invaders runs.
And Seven also moving from 7pm to 7:30pm starts around the same time.
With a variety of factors (M rating being changed to 7:30pm for movies, movies rating lower so wanting other programs to help share or to have similar start times as your rival).
I’ve noticed that too recently with their Saturday nights. Having Border Security and no The Great Outdoors at 7pm, followed by some doco-type show at 7.30, and the movie at 8.30pm.
Maybe they realised that movies at 7.30, followed by another at 9.30 or so, that there perhaps may have been a drop in ratings for the second movie, and not staying on until later in the night. Or just copying Nine’s style with programming.
Because more often than not they were selecting (acknowledging though that they might be restricted by availability with rights or have to play certain titles) films that went for way too long, with ads, sometimes 3 hours with a 10:30pm start for the later movie. And repeating the same titles too much, should only do this with proven hits or beloved favourites.
Take the recent Dan Brown ‘Dr Robert Langdon, symbologist’ adaptations with Tom Hanks, I’d say these are pretty niche (despite how huge the first one did at cinemas) and are fairly lengthy and dialogue-driven, which is why I thought the 8:30pm might’ve been intentional just for those three weeks.
Should really be aiming for a pre-10pm start, 9:30 or 9pm even better and that’s how it used to regularly be, certainly when they started PG ones (or modified) at 7pm and when they used to begin in the days of 30min news at 6:30pm you’d get the ideal 8:30pm start for the second movies, sometimes these used to rate on-par or higher than the earlier one too and would often be a first run.
Could very well be this.

And not to say they’re just trialling and may revert one week as well.
NRL airing saturday night games live in Melbourne on the main channel. which will practically get next to no ratings, yet 7 has west coast and sydney on 7mate on saturday night. The AFL needs to put 7 in their place, because this isn’t acceptable anymore. Especially as 9 has shown they will do more, for something that will generate less.
Considering West Coast’s form this season, not exposing their games to a wider audience is frankly a public service.
It’s not a national game. It’s a perth game. I get timezones and all, but 7 are putting more WA games on live on the main channel in 7 these days, and Sydney (no matter what form) should always be on the main channel. I can’t imagine the AFL would be too happy with how 7 have treated the AFL this year, especially seeing that 9 is more willing to accomodate for the NRL than 7 is with AFL these days.
The crazier thing is, next week, 7 will be broadcasting the AFL live in Brisbane (8:30pm) and Perth (6:30pm) both on the main channel. However, leave it to channel 7 to start the coverage 10 minutes after the ball has bounced, because for some reason they wanted to extend the news in perth by 10 minutes and run 3 episodes of home and away or better homes and gardens in QLD. Even weeks ago, they dumped the Adelaide game on 7mate for the twilight match so they could air their news program, which ended up reaching historic low numbers, because everyone switched over to 7mate. I could countless moments this year where 7 has treated their AFL programming with sheer stupidity. And they wonder why ratings have dropped while Kayo numbers has risen
I don’t think this is correct. They would not delay by 10mins. They probably got an agreement from the AFL or something
9’s NRL doesn’t have clashes with news. That’s the main reason 7 used 7mate for AFL. I don’t think the AFL cares about it because unlike NRL, each state gets to see their teams even if it’s 7mate.
It’s just like the cricket swapping to 7mate during day night tests.
People tune in just for the news, if it’s not on 7, then people will go to 9. That’s why they are doing Sunday afternoon 5 mins early and why they swap a game to 7mate during the news. They know the people who watch the AFL will swap and people who watch the news get the news. It’s extra people watching channel on 7.
It is true. Fremantle vs Brisbane is airing at 8:30pm live in Brisbane, and 6:30pm live in Perth. The bounce time for that game is 8:20pm/6:20pm, so broadcast will start 10 minutes after the first bounce. The AFL hasn’t updated the bounce time as well, meaning there was no agreement. Channel 7 just decided to not show the first 10 minutes of a broadcast for two teams who could make the top 4. It’s even more heinous in queensland, because there is no need for the extra 30 minutes in programming from 8pm (the original broadcast time). They could have at least aired it from the bounce in QLD, but no.
The Sydney game this saturday doesn’t clash with the news. So what’s the excuse for not airing it on 7? Nine has shown every Storm game in primetime on 9, yet 7 can’t do the same? They can’t even air the AFL in an AFL state like Perth.
The AFL isn’t test cricket. Test cricket has lots of lulls. A twilight game (by the time 6pm has reached) is usually at its peak viewing period. You can’t compare both codes, and 7 (if they were smart) should have aired the news after the AFL, because no one switched to 9, or stayed on the news on 7. They went to 7mate. Had 7 aired the news at 7pm that night, they probably would have had their highest adelaide figures in years, and they actually lost the news ratings war that night, because 7 depends on adelaide to make up for their losses in Syd and Melb.
I say we should give it some leeway until Tuesday morning/afternoon. It may be slow to update the start time and broadcast schedule on the AFL website.
(Take it from my error-laden schedule prediction based purely off of what AFLW provides.)
By that day, if it’s still 6:20 vs 6:30, then the backlash could begin.
Finally got a chance to have a listen to this, it was actually quite in-depth and interesting, nice get Aaron.
Was surprised how detailed and candid both programmers were to the queries, some fascinating insights too, not something I’d probably expect from the likes of Angus Ross or Brook Hall higher up.
Rubbish. The AFL website is just slow to be updated. They’ll fix it once Laura Kane or someone in her department gets around to it…
I was surprised by the answer about the Rookie, a show that I watch and know people who love it but 7 are always slow with it and find other ways to watch it.
I understand that the show is 18 weeks and they want it with strong lead in etc BUT It’s #1 or #2 on 7+ so should be fast tracked, especially since ABC US airs it with no breaks since the move to Jan and it has a good following after finding popularity with Netflix
I also thought two other things were interesting:
They were both pretty defensive when asked about 7flix, one claiming he actually loves the channel and saying they actually thought it had the most “obvious channel identity” of their m/c suite.
And that both mentioned Blue Heelers as the former iconic Seven show they’d like to see make a comeback one day.
They actually said Celebrity Splash and then when I said how surprised I was… they went traditional with Blue Heelers.
I get the 7flix thing - they have themed nights now so better than before but the whole channel is what? random shows, First Dates UK. cooking, movies,
Compared to what though, could say the same for most of the multis.
I believe the channel has been performing stronger since it got L&O a couple of years ago and especially on those nights, which also fixed its long-time problem of Sundays. And the Friday and Saturday movie marathons have always done well.
And yes the CSI and House line-up nights are better than the mish-mash of previous, unsure how they’re going, but the former has been there all year and usually Seven are quick to react to bad performances, so must be doing alright and the latter is fairly new there. I’m more surprised with Ramsay still being there, but that must be somewhat popular too. I think they should’ve kept classic First Dates and Modern Family, they may have lost the rights to the latter though.
I think all of the above get audiences on 7Plus too and that’d be more what they’re wanting anyway rather than purely 7flix.
I wouldn’t be surprised if its demographics have changed a little too, especially after adding L&O, CSI and House, to more 18-49s or 25-54s and a more even split of genders (when it was 16-39s and female skewed previously).
Should’ve Premiered GPGS on 7Plus before it aired on 7.
