Ratings. You put any AFL or NRL game on the secondary channel, and it will rate less. Perth’s noticeable drop off in TV ratings for AFL games the moment they switched the games to 7mate prove that; and i’m happy the AFL are finally doing something about it. Hopefully both the league and 7 work out the best plan to get AFL games on the main channel next season. Maybe 30 minute thursday and friday news segments or airing the first hour on 7mate, then transferring the game to the main channel.

Seven have ALL seasons correct. There might be deals with other outlets for previous seasons but Seven has them all

Seven Perth’s broadcast of West Coast v GWS will still begin on 7mate at 5.30pm, before moving across to main channel at 6.20pm.
Better Homes and Gardens will air on 7two at 7pm due to live AFL.

I wonder if the AFL could broadcast perth specific AFL matches next season as a workaround. Maybe every thursday, friday or saturday night, have a WA team play live 6:30pm in perth (8:30pm in the other states). You could even have friday night double headers like the one that is about to air with Perth team playing in the WA market, and the Vic team playing in the Vic market.
Or even split the weeknight matches between Adelaide and Perth (and Brisbane pre first weekend in April)
I think Perth works well for a friday double header, because it would air around 2 hours after 7 coverage (given the timezone differences), so it would give viewers a chance to flick over if the 7 coverage is boring, and it would mean once the 7 coverage is over, the rest of the viewers could switch as well. (assuming they have 7 and Kayo). The other advantage is that you’re getting two games on 7’s coding, so the ratings would be a lot higher given WA audiences will tune into higher numbers, and it would be even higher if they were facing a Sydney, Adelaide or Brisbane team as well. This is how Ten’s saturday night football used to dominate ratings, because they would have two games on in different markets and capitalise on the ratings. If i was 7, i would also be insisting on Sydney or Brisbane having a permanent primetime fixture. Ratings are significantly higher when one of these teams are playing as well. Living in Brisbane, they used to call the Broncos Friday Night Broncos, because in the old rights, they were given the Friday night slot pretty much every week.

AFL probably asked the question to 7 west “If Nine can shorten the news for origin, why can’t you do the same for AFL?” The AFL and 7 needs to work out the best way to tackle this next season, but its obvious that AFL games can’t be locked behind a secondary channel anymore, especially in an AFL city like Perth. As the FTA market shrinks, channels like 7 mate (which were for secondary low rated programs back in 2013) are even less popular today.
